Cruz, Cornyn Lead Coalition Filing Amicus Brief in Support of Texas HB 2
Ted Cruz - U.S. Senator from Texas ^ | 2/3/16

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, U.S. Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and John Cornyn (R-Texas), along with U.S. Reps. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), Pete Olson (R-Texas), and Lamar Smith (R-Texas), led a broad congressional coalition filing an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of Texas HB 2, which establishes standards for abortion providers and facilities. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt later this spring.

"Those who advocate for abortion often claim that it should be 'safe, legal, and rare,'" Sen. Cruz said. "Unfortunately, abortion is not always 'safe' for women. Not long ago, we saw just how dangerous an unscrupulous abortionist can be. Kermit Gosnell, who ran a Philadelphia abortion mill, treated his women patients little better than the unborn babies he slaughtered. He subjected the women in his care to unsanitary, degrading, and inhumane treatment, undermining their dignity and health, and even taking one of their lives. In response to this horror, the Texas Legislature enacted H.B. 2, just like other state legislatures across the country, to ensure that abortion clinics are held to the same medical standards as other medical facilities. But even this commonsense regulation for the protection of women is too much for the abortion lobby, which has challenged the regulation all the way to the Supreme Court. For the most zealous abortion advocates, nothing--not even women's health--can be allowed to stand in the way of abortion-on-demand. Today, a bipartisan group of 174 members of Congress have filed an amicus brief in defense of the right of legislatures across the country to enact medical protections for women. I am honored to have worked with my fellow senator from Texas, John Cornyn, and with Reps. Vicky Hartzler, Pete Olson, and Lamar Smith to bring this mighty coalition together."

"By requiring abortion clinics to be held to the same standards as other medical facilities, the Texas law protects the health of both the mother and child," said Sen. Cornyn. "Upholding this law is important not just for the well-being of women and children in Texas, but to preserve the right of states to pass laws that are in the best interests of its citizens."

"The potential impacts of this case are staggering," Rep. Hartzler said. "Upholding this law ensures that the abortion facilities don't get a free pass on health and safety standards at the expense of women's health, and it could serve as a template for other states. Overturning it endangers women's health and could place other reasonable regulations on abortion in jeopardy. The infamous abortionist Kermit Gosnell was not an outlier - we must protect women and children from other Gosnells."

"Texas has a sacred duty to protect the health of our residents, which is why physicians performing abortions must practice the same safety standards as every other medical practitioner," Rep. Olson said. "Our Constitution gives states the autonomy to determine the best laws to protect public health. I was proud to join both of our Texas Senators, every Texas US House Republican and a bipartisan group of 174 other Senators and House members in urging the US Supreme Court to uphold this life saving Texas state law. Women seeking an abortion and the unborn babies who may survive an abortion attempt deserve quality care in the event of an emergency. The Supreme Court should give deference to states like Texas on matters of life and health."

Rep. Smith said, "States like Texas have both the right and the responsibility to ensure the highest health and safety standards for their citizens. This bill includes practical, common-sense measures that protect lives and prioritize women's health. I hope that the Supreme Court will rule in favor of life and states' rights to regulate within their own borders."

In total, 34 senators and 140 House members have signed onto the brief, which can be found here.

This is newsworthy & important, unfortunately half the people now posting here seem to care more about the effectiveness of Trump’s mean tweets than this...

Thanks for noticing it.

It definitely goes to “walking the walk.” The pro-aborts have pushed back against protections that Tennessee amended our Constitution to enact. Ted is fighting for ME on this.

Which is exactly the same thing Ted said about marriage.

Note the consistency.

This must mean Cornyn is coming up for election soon.

Typical calendar play for JC. A typical right turn for John Establishment Cornyn, whose pattern CRuse begged to follow in the senate.

This is why so few conservative goals ever make it.

Is it only now, ask yourself, that these two climbers could have issued such an effort?

REMEMBER MISSISSIPPI. Cruz cash funded it. That’s really not okay. Yes, he squealed about it after the deed was done. He played it just like Cornyn would have.

"Those who advocate for abortion often claim that it should be 'safe, legal, and rare..."

I never understood the "rare" part. Since abortion-lovers don't consider the baby alive, there is no reason to want to limit the procedure. A blob of cells is a blob of cells. We don't try to make cancer operations rare. We don't try to make dental surgeries rare. What's so special about abortions, if the tissue being removed is nothing special?

Cornyn is not up for election this time but do-nothing Pete Olson is.

“I hope that the Supreme Court will rule in favor of life and states’ rights to regulate within their own borders.” Me too.

The problem for the Abortion Lobby is that if power is devolved to the States, in any way by the Supreme Court",then certain states can progressively erode the "Universal Right" to an abortion.

We don’t try to make dental surgeries rare.
*******************
I think that phrasing goes back to the early 1970’s timeframe when effective birth control was still an issue and pro-aborts were still concerned with gaining approval from the public. The “pill” was obscenely strong with serious side effects (plan “B” now is essentially just the early pill) , the IUD could only be inserted after a pregnancy , diaphrams were and are unwieldy and failure prone.. We indeed try to make dental surgery “rare” by offering effective preventive care.

“REMEMBER MISSISSIPPI.”

Yes, I remember Mississippi and was proud to have worked for Senator McDaniel and was very upset with the NRSC spending on behalf of Cochran in the primary. I haven’t given any money since to the RNC, RNSC, RNCC, or the Mississippi GOP. If senator Cruz helped Senator McDaniel financially I say, Thank YOU, Senator Cruz, we need more like you Washington.

I received the following from Senator McDaniel yesterday.

Senator Chris McDaniel
22 hrs ·

From day one of this presidential season, I’ve had 4 candidates I’ve openly discussed in a positive light (each for different reasons): Cruz, Carson, Paul and Trump.

Although I do not believe Trump to be a Constitutional Conservative, I’ve always admired his courage and LOVED it when he challenged the establishment. I understand his supporters and their outrage.

But a small number of Trump’s people have become delusional, detached from reason and sanity.
...

The Carson supporters are always polite, much like their candidate. The Paul supporters are always kind, firm and principled.

But in the past four days, a contingent of Trump supporters have called me a communist, a liberal, an establishment insider and a RINO.

Do they not know history? Do they not care to know history? Is such ignorance common in our system? Or is it just a knee-jerk reaction? Does his record matter? Does mine? How does this happen?

I’ve been in political office for 9 years. Before that, I was a conservative commentator and activist. I’ve spent 2 decades fighting for conservative causes. I’ve never backed away from a fight, and I’ve never abandoned my principles. At no time in my life have I been called a communist, liberal, establishment insider or RINO.

Such reckless and blind loyalty to a personality concerns me greatly.

To my sane Trump friends, can you kindly explain?

Frankly, “no”, such a statement, if true, can NOT be explained.

It can only mean Chris is ignorant of Cruz’ absence and has not been able to put two and two together.

Or, CRuse has baked McDaniel a cake and is making up for his climb up McConnell’s pants leg, perhaps, with a promise for a nice position with CRuse.

Cash and favors buy support, money exchanges, loyalty, and promises.

I had heard that Chris was supporting CRuse. I could not believe it. It made me wonder why the hell I was even so heart broken over his treatment there, in MS.

To know how CRuse let every.single.conservative. swing from a tree, as they were fighting the establishment during that election made me pretty sick.

Wonder if McDaniel knows of the McConnell “lawyer”, and his financial support to CRuse. $325,000.000

Thankfully, TRUMP is responsible for his own triumphs and failures, and enjoys freedom to be a citizen president, God willing, owing nothing to anyone. Now THAT is the secret ingredient when speaking truth to power.
