Sen. Pat Toomey endorses Marco Rubio for president
Morning Call ^ | 02/03/2016 | Laura Olson

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey endorsed Marco Rubio for president Wednesday, describing the Florida senator as a "thoughtful conservative leader" he believes will appeal to voters in Pennsylvania and across the country.

Just hours later, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum quit the presidential race and also endorsed Rubio, calling him a "born leader" who shares his views on the central role of the family and on the national security threats facing the country.

The support from Toomey and Santorum comes as Rubio is seeking to solidify backing from the GOP establishment after his third-place finish in Iowa. Toomey, a Republican from the Lehigh Valley, is the sixth U.S. senator to endorse Rubio, according to a tally by FiveThirtyEight.com.

"He can communicate as well as any Republican I've ever met," Toomey told reporters after announcing his support in a CNN interview. "He has an optimistic, upbeat message about what America can become again."

Toomey praised Rubio as someone who has earned leadership credentials as the speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and during his tenure in the U.S. Senate, where he said Rubio has gained a deep understanding of foreign policy and national security.

"I think the contrast between Marco Rubio and Hillary Clinton is tremendous, especially on national security matters," Toomey said, calling the Democratic presidential candidate's tenure as secretary of state "the most failed period of American foreign policy in recent memory."

Privately, Rubio had received Toomey's support before his better-than-projected finish in Iowa. Toomey said he called Rubio last week and said he wanted to "help him any way I can."

This Trump campaign is better that having Madame Defarge knitting the names of everyone to be killed in the French revolution! By the end of this, all the GOPee will be outed!

So weird that Cruz is not getting these endorsements. There has to be more reasons then just not agreeing on bills and shutting down the government. It has to be personal. I bet Cruz in the lunchroom acts like he is arrogant and know it all. I don’t think this has to do with trying to get the bills he wants. Cruz couldn’t convince a drunk to drink another drink.

Very odd and of course he says he does’t care which is probably not true. Nobody goes to work with not a single person willing to support you.

I still think it is stunning that Mike Lee hasn’t endorsed him and says he won’t.

I think this is a Cruz problem and not the Senators problems.

Even though you rip Cruz like he stole you wife, lol, and i like him, i like you better and get a kick out of your comments.

But i’m kind of shocked that everyone knows i’m from ny and this is my first primary and NY isn’t until APRIL 16??? and no one told me? :)

there’s 35 states before us! this thing will probably be all done by then.

and it runs through June?!?!

what the heck?

half the time all our elected officials do is run for office!

Thanks. I always get crazy during the primary......I feel I was worse in 2012 trying to support Santorum when everyone here were bashing him......I was so mad.......and we ended up with the worst....Romney. Now I feel as frustrated with supporting Trump and everyone going against me again.......I never get the candidate I want. Ever. Very frustrating.

I think my main objection to Cruz is the way elections run....the one with a personality win. That is how it has been for 50 years. We cannot run a stump and expect to win. This is our election to lose.....I mean we haven’t had it this easy in decades (since Mondale).......and we want to pick a guy that is so socially inept in an American Idol society? FREEPERS who I absolutely love everyone lives in this bubble sometimes especially when it comes to politics. They have no idea that we need to get over 50 percent of the voters.........can Cruz do that? I just don’t think so. Heck Hillary can do that heckle Crackle whatever it is during the debates and the camera will show that sneer that Cruz can do and it will be a story somehow.

Just trying to be realistic. Plus that show tune story really freaks me out. I already suspect the guy and now we find out he sings show tunes.....goes to gay parties.....is very metrosexual at best......wife depressed (is it that she is done being a beard?)......I just must see things that others done.

I don’t know what to say. I guess no matter what, we better pick the right person. I had my wife read your post and she said, “Cruz wouldn’t be interested in me but you better be careful.....lol. I don’t know. A big story is coming but I am not sure what it will be.....but I have been saying this for a few weeks. Time will tell.

Ok.....seeing Phantom is one thing (even 4 times) but traipsing along in your home is a bit much which is how he explained what he did........Yieks.

Anyway we will have quite a “trip” the next 71 days that is for sure.

Hmm, who has endorsed the Donald other than Bob Dole, Jimmy Carter and a few others? By the way, you all can forget about Phyllis Schlafly’s endorsement of Trump. I’m a former radio talk host in Northern California. I had Mrs. Schlafly on my radio show a few years ago, so I called her this morning to ask her to support Ted Cruz. She SAID SHE HAD NOT ENDORSED TRUMP; IT WAS MORE BAD REPORTING. By the way, how many House Republicans have endorsed Cruz (at least 10-15) and how many have endorsed the Donald (ZERO)? Nice try.

Hey, here in Indiana they don’t present us with the GOPe’s choice until May 3rd! The Democrats don’t even bother voting for them in our open primary.
