I remember reading a “New Tom Swift” book, back in the late sixties, about them drilling to the center of the earth to uncover a vast storage of new minerals.

...had set out to drill down to 4,265 feet in a stretch of ocean floor ...Boys; it's approximately 3950 miles to the center; so we've only 3949 miles and some feet to go.
