Byron York: At Veterans' Event, Trump's Biggest Gamble
The Washington Examiner ^ | Friday, January 29, 2016 | Byron York

Posted on 01/29/2016 4:46:21 AM PST by kristinn

The Donald Trump who appeared onstage at Drake University Thursday night -- just two miles from the Republican presidential debate he was boycotting -- was a different Donald Trump from the man who stars in rowdy rallies on the campaign trail.

The Trump at Drake's Sheslow Auditorium said not a word about the polls that are his ongoing obsession. (Actually, that's not entirely true -- he mentioned the polls, but without the sheer numerical intensity he usually displays.) Trump also shared the stage with others -- not just with Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum, who came to the event after the GOP undercard debate, but also with John Wayne Walding, a retired Green Beret who lost a leg in Afghanistan, and with Diamond and Silk, a pair of North Carolina sisters who make pro-Trump YouTube videos and bill themselves as "African American women…voicing their opinions about media bias, political babble, and repetitive political tactics…"

Finally, Trump didn't call anybody stupid -- that is, he dialed back the rhetoric that marks the usual Trump rally performance. In his remarks, Trump focused mostly on veterans and announced that he had, so far, raised $6 million for veterans' causes, mostly from a few big contributions from Trump friends -- including $1 million from himself.

In other words, Trump promised a different sort of event, and that's what took place at Drake.

What did not play out on the stage was the fact that the veterans event was the biggest gamble of Trump's campaign so far...

“What did not play out on the stage was the fact that the veterans event was the biggest gamble of Trump’s campaign so far...”

Nonsense. It was utterly no risk. He dodged the ambush and his lowly opponents feasted on each other. Every candidate with a seemingly insurmountable lead would want to sit out a debate if he could do so without humiliation.

Pretty amazing that he pulled this off with only 24 hrs of preparation.

You’re welcome.

Why don’t they attach names to those Frank Luntz focus group quotes?

You’re right, it was no gamble at all. Trump clearly WON the debate, perhaps even more decisively that if he had been on stage, as it was then Ted Cruz who taking all the slings and arrows from the rival candidates. While Cruz acquitted himself well, he caught all the damage that The Donald avoided, and especially, the “embarrassment” questions from the audience never came up for The Donald to have to respond to.

The Establishment thinks it was a gamble because they would never try it. Too risky. Wooooo. Too outside the box. Too anti-establisment.

Only Trump would do something bold. And not even break a sweat.

Everyone knows that now. The rest are go along to get along scaredy cats who don’t know how to act without their LSM telling them what to do next.

Don’t know. From what I’ve seen of their opinions on this and aspects of debate it seems the focus group was too focused in one direction. Almost like it was stacked to get desired results.

Right
Because the people of Iowa will judge a man’s fitness to be President of the U.S. by how well he handles biased loaded snarky jibes from Chris Wallace and MeGyn Kelly

The fact that anyone is even willing to give an hour of his time playing the game in this petty theater of the absurd cloaked as a “ debate’ gives us an idea of his priorities and sense of self worth

He probably planned this weeks out. Hollywood themselves could not have done it in 24 hrs.

Lil Donnie, poor fellow, he didn’t like the play pen and had to have his own.

Little Biffy, his candidate sucks so bad he is reduces to posting infantile snarks at the other candidates since he has nothing worthwhile to post about his guy.

“Almost like it was stacked to get desired results.”

Wouldn’t surprise me! Those quotes are rather meaningless without identifying the individuals.

I just posted a new thread.

Marco Rubio Previously Paid Pollster Frank Luntz, Who Praised Rubio on Fox News

Fox News used a pollster to host a pro-Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)79%
focus group after Thursday night’s Republican debate, despite the fact that the pollster actually had Rubio as a client.

What most people don’t know is being a good CEO means taking risks.
I’ve worked for some of the best...
Andy Grove was a tough CEO but taking risks was part of his mantra.

A private man with simple needs but until this looser, BK became CEO of Intel, the company was one of the best run companies in America.

Grove wasn’t afraid of anything.

Larry "Lonesome" Rhodes. Yes. Yes he is.

Run away child before I am forced to spank you again. You are so far out of your depths intellectually around here that it can only end in your total humiliation.
