I’m surprised they aren’t buying battery powered vehicles with a 80 mile range.
But the GOvernemnt knows how to spend our money so much better than we do!
Ask Bernie
And remember, this is the same government that wants to run our health care.
Who needs mail anymore..it is all junk mail
Presume the hint here is true - this would be another bailout of Government Motors as much as it would be of the USPS.
They could buy a lot of Chevy Volts for that...........................
They just loose money and the Government covers the loss
Looks like a great scam
Government cannot cut funding????
This is all about Government Post Office propping-up Government Motors.
Tell it to SOUTHWEST.
I guess this guy does not realize that a lot of USPS rural route drivers drive personal vehicles they own.
And surprisingly use some good flexibility.
We normally get delivery from the classic white box truck but when snow is deep and conditions bad, they switch to a privately owned Jeep with “monster truck” suspension and tires.
Seriously, technology is changing so fast they should lease IMHO. FWIW their is no hybrid version of the Transit Connect, and their are rumors in the auto press ( and SAE papers / speeches ), of Ford working on a 48V architecture Mild-Hybrid w/ Start Stop that will be lighter and still save maybe 20% instead of 30% at a lower cost. Now would it be available on the Transit Connect? who knows. What does Jeep have up their sleeve? I don't know either.
With that said, that technology could be pass-a in 5 years, so why go long term on this stuff?
If the post office wasn't so broke, this would be a great place for early production run type of "let's try this" type of vehicles. Now imagine either the Jeep or the TC being hybrid / mild hybrid and running cheaper CNG. This is the place to try this stuff IMHO....
My husband is one of them.
They should be in postal Jeeps, the way god intended. And they should have to wear a recognizable uniform. Ive had a few that look like total bums.
“Who needs mail anymore..it is all junk mail”
No kidding! our curbside trash pickup day is the best day of the week because I can walk from the mailbox to the recycle receptacle the night before and avoid having to carry all the crap into the house and out again. If it weren’t for junk mail, the USPS could use bicycles in our neighborhood. The USPS should be disbanded and the business turned over to private busineses. The Constitution is a real hinderance here.
A few years ago during the depths of the recession, I actually saw several old postal Jeeps out on the delivery routes in north Texas. Some fleet manager must’ve had a few of ‘em mothballed.
The Bureau of Prisons has several facilities around the country that were setup for inmates to rebuild military vehicles such as trucks and Humvees. After the tear down everything including the frame could be replaced if needed. Transmissions were rebuilt and dynoed. Diesel engines were sent to rebuilders. All the other components of the trucks were taken down to bare metal, primed and repainted. Anything that was damaged or had its functionality compromised was replaced.
On the split rims, the lock ring was replaced with a new one as were other critical parts. Once repainted, new tires were mounted.
Those facilities are now setting idle since the days we were actively involved in Iraq are gone.
Maybe the postal service needs to talk to the Bureau of Prisons and contract them to renovate their existing fleet. Along the way some of the missing features such as intermittent wipers could be installed.
If nothing else, prison labor is cheap.
And they are not even mentioning self-driving delivery vehicles.
Who knows if the post office will even exist 25 years from now??
This is STUPID STUPID STUPID and if you worked for a company like FedEx or UPS you would fire the moron who proposed it.
But it’s The Government - they know how to spend
