One thing to check is see if any of the crew are named “Mohammad”.
Active Duty ping.
A 4 YO vessel having oil problems in its gear assembly? And no one noticed early signs of problems — temperature, filtration, etc?
I would have never gotten my Surface Warfare Officer pin if the first 1179 class LST to deploy operationally had not gone belly up with engineering problem requiring our LST to do five of its six or seven month deployment. In this case being stuck in Singapore until they fix it sounds like great duty to me. Sabotage sounds evil to me, but then in the new Navy maybe so.
Yup, absurd title.
Would like to add that I smell some BS. The reduction gears do not “use” (burn, leak, vent etc) oil. Its not like a combustion engine...its a large gear box. Alignment or loss of a lube pump would be a likely cause. You would think the electric driven backup pump would kick in at a low pressure setting.....Maybe its a piece of shit like the Guam was.
Maybe lilac- scented homosexual sex “lube oil” doesn’t work in war ships?
Because someone left the dipstick at 1600 Pennsylvania
I'm not a seafaring salt of the seven seas, but does a "wiped" bearing mean a bearing who's rolling elements have departed their intended paths, and have been liberated so they can explore the wider world of the power train as a whole?
I would imagine that the one or more of the associated pinion gears might depart their preordained alignment parameters to some extent as well.
When I worked out of the federal building in Norfolk, I lived in Virginia Beach. Used to pass by the gate to Little Creek all the time.
I loved to photograph the ships from near Fort Story. I still have a picture of the Nimitz rounding the Virginia Capes after several 500lb bombs went off on deck. I was surprised that the Norfolk Naval Shipyard had it repaired in just a few days.
I also got some of three British Frigates stopping by Norfolk on their was to the Falklands. I could not read the numbers but I am sure one of them was HMS Sheffield.
Bump
Holy smokes. The guys are going to seek out girls while they are stuck in Singapore??? Who knew?????
WTF?!
That mini ship can handle 7.62mm hits but a .50 caliber blows holes thru its hull, etc?
What a worthless “ship”!
.50 caliber machine guns are a common armament on even smaller boats....and this fancy dancy “ship” can’t handle .50 hits?
Jeez! What were they smoking?
“Wiped” as in the babbit of the bearing spalded, scraped, wore off from lack of lubricant. Not a roller bearing. more like a rod bearing in your car, but larger, and in a gear box. But its been 40 years since I crawled around in one....maybe they changed design a lot?
Oh, I see.
I Googled "pinion gear," and the images showed paired gears on a common shaft with integrated roller bearings.
Wow......... That must have been a sight.
So not only are these ships inadequately armed, but their main advantage is supposed to be speed. Problem is, their power plant is unreliable.
Great
Welcome to women in the military *ducks, runs*
