GOP presidential candidate Sen. Rick Santorum defended GOP frontrunner Donald Trump's values during a radio interview on Breitbart News Sunday on SiriusXM Patriot Channel 125.
Santorum also said that with GOP presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz, "you've seen a shift" on some issues.
Breitbart News asked Santorum if he believes Trump is sincere on his conservative principles following the recent criticism by Cruz about Trump's "New York values" shared in a 1999 interview between Trump and Tim Russert.
"Past is prologue and if you look at someone's past, it's legit," Santorum began, but added, "people change and that's a good thing. I want to encourage everybody to be more conservative."
"You look at some of the greatest conservatives, many of them changed positions over the years," Santorum added. He said:
People do change their minds over 15-year period of time. I mean, if it's something you did last year or the year before, then I'm thinking, 'Well, maybe you're conveniently changing your mind for the purposes of running for office.' I think if you go back 15 years and you've seen a progression, I'm not sure that's legit.
"I went to visit Donald Trump about a year an a half ago in his office when I was in New York and it was about three months after I wrote my book Blue Collar Conservatives," Santorum explained. "He was holding a copy of my book."
"He said, 'I read your book.' My response was, 'The hell you read my book,'" Santorum joked. "He said, 'Yeah, I really did. I read your book.'"
"He read enough that we could have a conversation," Santorum said.
GOP presidential candidate former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee also defended Trump in an interview on Saturday against Cruz's criticism.

Whoa. Donald Trump read his book.
And people thought Santorum couldn't be bought.
“Pick me, pick me. I can be your Pennsylvanian VP.”
Mark levin will keep him off his show now
Everybody loves a sweater vest!
Rick Santorum always has been a big government GOPe spender and certainly no conservative. He voted however McConnel and Specter wanted him to when in the Senate.
This is further proof the GOPe wants Trump and is scared to death of Cruz.
Phony Rick showing his true colors. ( along with the Huckster )
I have always disliked this petulant little weasel.
Levin lost me as a listener years ago when he refused to acknowledge Islam/Muslim Brotherhood as the real problem (i.e., the problem with OBAMA!).
So let Levin play kingmaker in his little castle. He has a moat around it so nobody can get in. I don’t think Levin realizes that he’s making himself obsolete.
Isn’t that sweet. Santorum angling for the VP spot, like that would happen.
Supported Santorum the last time around but now all he is doing is trying to splinter the social conservative vote so that Trump, a social liberal can win the nomination. Santorum please don’t be a Quisling.
I like him, but he always reminded me of a squad leader in Jr. High gym class.
The main reason I like him is that he’s from my Dad’s home town. He calls it a “steel town” but the last mill left before he was born.
Thank you Rick for the kind things you have said about Trump and the deep feelings you have for the American People and America!!!
Now if he had come out with something in support of Cruz you would see the Cruzettes bending over backwards in support of Rick. It is just the way the world turns.
I would be very surprised if Mr. Santorum used the word ‘hell’ with Mr. Trump at that moment. Surprised he used it in the interview.
Noop
Rick who are you? You are not the man I thought you were.
Really? So not ok for Ted Cruz to “shift” on some issues but Donald can go from a NY Liberal to a Conservative and that’s OK.
