THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL

JAM SESSION WITH COUNT BASIE'S MUSICIANS

"The audience is asked to accept the jam session in a spirit of experimentation, with the hope that the proper atmosphere will be established."
...from the program notes

It was producer John Hammond who suggested that key members of Basie's band sit in on the session.

This famous tune is by Thomas "Fats" Waller.

It starts with piano (Count Basie) and trumpet (Harry James). The first chorus goes to tenor sax (Lester Young). It's piano (Basie) and drums (Gene Krupa) next. There is a chorus on trumpet (Buck Clayton) and then alto sax (Johnny Hodges). The Basie rhythm section takes point with bass (300 pound Walter Page) conversing with piano (Basie). Goodman takes his choruses on clarinet and then Harry James on trumpet. James and Goodman lead the way out.

Krupa and James were to leave the band shortly after this concert to go out on their own. The band never sounded this good again.

Here's what Krupa's band sounded like:

Swing band leader Charlie Barnet obviously doesn't care for the "sweet band" sound of Sammy Kaye.

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL

THE GOODMAN TRIO

The Goodman Trio came about at a chance meeting between Goodman and Krupa with Teddy Wilson, a freelance pianist, at a Mildred Bailey party in 1935. A few recordings resulted, and Wilson joined the Goodman band on an on-and-off basis.

This song may sound like it was recorded by a local singing group deep in the Appalachians, but believe it or not, it is by none other than the Gentleman of Swing. The female soloist is a very young Jo Stafford, who had only recently begun her singing career.

Good evening, Connie...the tv guy is still here, but it looks like the internet is ok. *hugs*

2 tvs are too old for TiVo boxes....the system is upgrading equipment. Swapping old for new makes my bill go down. So....I’m swapping, but with issues.

Ping coming up.

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL

THE GOODMAN QUARTET

In 1936, the Goodman Trio became the Goodman Quartet with the addition of Lionel Hampton on vibraphone. Hampton was already a legend due to his work with Louis Armstrong. He came east to join Goodman, and they never sounded better.

"Avalon" is an Al Jolson and Billy Rose composition.

"Avalon"

The next two pieces are from the pens of George and Ira Gershwin.

"The Man I Love"

"I Got Rhythm"

We'll be back tomorrow night with the second part.

The USC Trojans may have been chalking up another winning season, but in the fall of 1930, things were getting progressively worse for the economy as well as the Republican Party. This song, seemingly appropriate for the time, was a big hit, recorded by several acts. Here's one of the best.
