Good evening to you as well. I grew up in the 60’s (early born in the 50’s) and even then I had my limits.Made it half way to Woodstock but Bowie’s music played little role in my life.

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL

William "Count" Basie's 1 AM network radio show had a theme that possessed no official name. One night while the band was jamming and having a good time prior to broadcast, the engineer was listening, enjoying himself -- and ignoring the clock. At 1 AM, the engineer glanced casually at the clock, went into a panic, pushed the button for the in-house microphone, and yelled to Basie and the band, "It's one o'clock! Jump!" That's how Basie's theme song got its name.

It starts with Jess Stacy's piano solo paying tribute to Basie, who was standing in the wings at Carnegie Hall. Then come solos for tenor sax (Babe Russin), trombone (Vernon Brown), clarinet (Goodman) and piano (Stacy), followed by more piano (Stacy), trumpet (Harry James) and clarinet (Goodman) for the end.

"One O'clock Jump"

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL

TWENTY YEARS OF JAZZ

This set was Irving Kolodin's suggestion.

Nick La Rocca and his Original Dixieland Band were important players in the years after World War I, bridging ragtime and jazz. Old timers will remember this tune as the Ajax Cleanser commercial in the Fifties.

"Sensation Rag"

"Bix" Beiderbecke, drinking companion of Bing Crosby during his badass days, died in 1931, and this tribute to him is played by Bobby Hackett on cornet.

"I'm Coming Virginia"

Goodman got his first break in showbiz imitating Ted Lewis in 1923 in Chicago. Lewis was Columbia's answer to La Rocca, who recorded for Victor. After the war, a girl named Norma Jean Mortenson would sell some coke to Lewis backstage and get a Hollywood reference that would eventually turn her into Marilyn Monroe.

"When My Baby Smiles at Me"

This is Harry James playing a famous Louis Armstrong effort.

"Shine"

This was a Duke Ellington tune. Solos are soprano sax (Johnny Hodges), piano (Jess Stacy), baritone sax (Harry Carney) and trumpet (Cootie Williams).

"Blue Reverie"

THE NIGHT OF JANUARY 16, 1938

BENNY GOODMAN AT CARNEGIE HALL

The title is a tribute to a picture series in "Life" magazine covering an evening with the band. There are solos for sax (Babe Russin), clarinet (Goodman), piano (Jess Stacy) and trumpet (Harry James). Goodman and James wrote this number.

Krupa and James were to leave the band shortly after this concert to go out on their own. The band never sounded this good again.
