Well, they might have been spying. I have no idea and am not saying they were. But the story is fishy.

Special Ops would be deployed by Special Boat Units - no female sailors there - or submarine insertion/extraction and neither would require the use of small boats.

No reason to put boots on the ground - for what? This administration is certainly not at war with Iran. Surveillance/Intel? Better off using drones or satellites - both would see more than any person on the ground or boat on the water and there is little/no risks.

Curious to find out more about this. I know our ships routinely travel from point A to point B in those waters simply to show that we can and make our presence felt. What I can’t figure out is if one boat “broke down” why the other could not take it in tow out of the area. I find it very hard to believe that both boats would run aground, but there have been a few former Naval Captains that have run their ship onto shore - career suicide.

As a shallow water boat it might happen more - when you’re ordered to traverse water you think might be too shallow. But that’s what the second boat’s for, right? Iranians caught them with their pants down? We definitely need details.

I don’t want to say they were spying, but they were probably spying. Which really makes it whack a doo that they just sat out there and got caught.

It's very strange TWO boats at the same time would have mechanical problems and float into Iranian waters.

And, it's very strange Obama said nothing of the ten sailors held captive by Iran in his State of the Union speech tonight. The state of the union right now, is, TEN SAILORS ARE BEING HELD BY IRAN. That is the state of the union right this minute.

Could not Obama add one sentence to his speech to let us know he is on top of this and our sailors will be returned today as soon as it is light on that island where they are being held?

Just in time for the SOTU- a hostage crisis. Not mention the previous hostages haven't been released. (Are they still alive?)

But hey...We're giving them billions of dollars, and nuclear capability...yipee(/s).

Again though - the eye of a drone is much more powerful than human eyes from ground level.

You would think any mission this close to waters that Iran claims would be pretty scripted with lots of contingency plans. This almost looks amateurish and the depths of those waters are very well mapped - military GPS is much better than bitching Betty GPS on the dash of my car.

Would guess there is some major puckerage going on right now with Navy brass.

That’s what we do if taking their people doesn’t work. You always have to have a next step up.

The rumor is now the troops will be handed over at 2 a.m. Not sure what time zone, but that’s the internet word.

Obama wants to beat the newspaper cycle if possible so he doesn’t get HOSTAGE CRISIS DAY 2 headlines...

It’s a good thing I am not president. I’d get Iran on the phone and explain that my unharmed people would be released within 1 hour or I would begin nuking Iran and I wouldn’t stop until they were living in the stone age or all dead.

Second rule of spying: if you are caught, go quietly and let the diplomats sort it out.

“So one of two heavily armed fast boats broke down and the other one could not tow it out of Iran’s territorial waters? So they drifted along together until captured by the Iranian coast guard. Hmmmm.”

Certainly odd.
