I saw too many injured to look favorably upon combat football. It wasn’t too bad if it was limited to one or two balls. When you had fifty or sixty players on the field, it got quickly out of hand.
You interviewed someone who played for Stagg? At Chicago? Was it an interesting interview?
I found a link to that article in the Harvard magazine.
http://harvardmagazine.com/2003/09/first-and-100.html
It’s interesting - in 1905 there were 18 players killed on the field and 159 seriously injured.
He played for Stagg at Univ. of Pacific during WWII. It was at the end of Stagg’s coaching career. The guy I talked to had previously played for Howard Jones at USC.
That article is incorrect on at least one point. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is also a National Historic Landmark. It was added to the list in 1984.
Hunger games?
Combat Crud. . .now that is a dangerous game.
My sons played “smear the queer” in the 1980s. I had never heard of it before that. (But I’m a girl.)
Love it! Those must be some tough dudes. Winter playing in the river. Gives this girl the chills.
