Hollywood has told women to date nerds for decades. It’s bad advice.
Washington Post ^ | January 7, 2015 | Stacia L. Brown

Posted on 01/08/2016 6:16:38 AM PST by C19fan

Earlier this week Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg made headlines for his response to commenter Darlene Hackemer Loretto who wrote that she encourages her granddaughters to “date the nerd in school [because] he may turn out to be Mark Zuckerberg.” The magnate — and new, first-time father of a daughter — deflected the supposed compliment, suggesting, “Even better would be to encourage them to *be* the nerd in school so they can be the next successful inventor.”

“A man may get to the end of his life never having to change a tire on a cold, snowy night. He won’t get to the end of his life as a man however.”

Exactly. To be in a normal range of “human”—you must experience living life which has to be interacting with humans to learn to control (and have) emotions. You must learn real life survival skills (outdoor/work ethic)—mastering environment

Nerds are removed from Reality (isolate themselves from human interaction)-—real life and live in books without learning real life human interaction-—or real mastery of the environment (outdoors)-—so they live in an unreality—a theoretical world.

When their “theories” deal with human beings they are pathetic-—only with numbers/machines can they look “competent” because they have NO understanding of human psychology. It is why they try to dehumanize people—reduce them to “bots” and put us into boxes (socialist societies-—to completely program and control us). John Dewey was a nerd, as was President Wilson.

Human interaction with “nerds” is like dealing with bots (programmed minds) who can’t understand real human emotions and can’t have flourishing, loving, “human” relationships.

I’d want my daughter to date a man that can hunt, farm, split wood, and read books to children....

I guess the generic ‘her’ mislead me into thinking you were talking about the woman in the story, not the author ...

I'm not a nerd.

Nerds are smart.

I have been married to a programmer for 20+ years. Only marry one if you want to be a well loved wife to a man who doesn’t cheat, who is an unselfish lover, who has a six figure income, and who can fix your computer/smartphone/Network connection/Netflix remote, etc.

My husband is in charge at my house. And we both like it that way.

Sure he will. One does not become not a man just because one is smart enough to live in the sunbelt. I’ve changed plenty of tires, but it’ll never happen in the snow because I refuse to live where white crap falls from the sky.

What about those who can, but don't plan on doing it?

"What about those who can, but don't plan on doing it?"

Like I say at work: "There's talkin', and there's doin', and they're not the same thing" (I hate meetings)
I pray my daughter ends up with a "do-er".

At this point, it would be useful to provide a definition of “nerd”.

I don’t need to split wood because I have a gas fire place. I have done it is ain’t that complicated. I know how to hunt and have done it before but I have other hobbies that one takes a lot of time. I have also farmed but don’t do it regularly. I don’t read usually to my daughter because she would rather read to me. I help her when she gets stuck. I have no more respect for a man that can’t change a tire than a man that can’t fix his own computer. Both are skills a modern man should have. Dollars per hour my nerd skills are way more valuable than my redneck skill, though I am proud to have both.

Women will NEVER be tired of being in charge.
What they are tired of -- is not having enough men around who can do the heavy lifting for them.
