Like the death of a man being being restrained by police while being arrested for selling Loosies.

True the man was resisting arrest but my point is that senseless laws breed lawlessness.

Enforcing senseless laws breeds violence and the death of those resisting those laws.

Don't forget senseless laws (and the arbitrary application thereof) breed contempt for the law and the raft of consequences that result.

Yes. But it also shows that there is a law of diminished returns when it comes to taxes even if you are taxing an addiction.

Normal law abiding people reach the point where they dig their heels and and say "No."

I didn’t buy them on purpose; I only noticed it later. We have so many quik-e-mart type stores run by foreigners replacing our American delis, so the only way to have some assurance of real goods it to use a chain (Quick Check or 7 Eleven).

As a non-smoker, liberals would expect me to support their social engineering against smokers. They would be wrong, as usual.

It is not government’s proper role to tell adults what they may or may not do, not even to nudge us in “positive’ directions. There is nothing more positive than freedom, and government manipulating our behavior means a loss of freedom. I’m glad to see the big government liberals of NY losing the money they depend on, just as I’m glad to see the GOP big government liberals (Jeb, Rubio, and Christie) floundering.

Unintended but surely expected by any economics student.

Maybe this is an excuse to raise their (New York) state income tax:
If your income range is between $0 and $8,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 4%.
If your income range is between $8,001 and $11,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 4.5%.
If your income range is between $11,001 and $13,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5.25%.
If your income range is between $13,001 and $20,000, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 5.9%.
If your income range is $20,001 and over, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 6.85%.

==========================
California state income tax:
11.3 percent on taxable income between $311,813 and $519,687.
12.3 percent on taxable income of $519,688 and above.
A 1 percent surcharge, the Mental Health Services Tax, is collected on taxable incomes of $1 million or more, making California's highest marginal rate 13.3 percent.

=========================
Hard to figure out whose is higher.

The important thing is we showed smokers how much we disapprove of them!

:o) They sure showed'em.

You can’t order online, out of state anymore. It’s against the law to ship them.

the article states “A law taking effect June 29 will ban most tobacco products from being delivered by the U.S. Postal Service”

It seems that wouldn’t exclude having them shipped by Fed Ex or UPS

Law of Demand: As prices increase the market demand decreases. Politicians seem to never learn basic economics.

they didn’t actuallyl ose anything- they simply raised taxes on everything else and created new taxes out of thin air to compensate

Why not put a heavy tax on liquor?

You do realize, of course, that the FedGov assesses liquor taxes, as do most states and some localities, right? In some states, the total liquor tax approaches $50.00 per barrel of distilled spirits.

It's not like nobody ever thought of this before.

Student: Cuomo. Grade F

You're obviously giving Clown Cuomo the benefit of a steep grade curve.

Best I can give Clown Cuomo is a grade of N. He might be able to improve to M or L with decades of remedial training, but it would require far more effort than that particular student has shown the inclination to expend.

If the objective is to get New York State smokers to quit then they don’t care about the revenue loss. If they don’t care about the revenue loss they should just make the entire state a no smoking zone (kinda like a Gun Free Zone). Anybody caught smoking anywhere in the state should be deported to someplace...like Vermont.

Remember that NYPD was arresting that fellow who was killed with an illegal choke hold for not paying the cigarette tax.
