New York is reaping the whirlwind of sky-high cigarette taxes with a wave of smuggling

They are so stupid in NY. Just pass a law against smuggling! /s

There is a much better way to look at this, which I will call the “CurlyDave Curve”.

Plot GDP vs. Tax Rate.

No, zero taxes will not produce the highest GDP, but maximizing GDP should be the objective of any administration.

Liberal logic would dictate doubling the tax again to recover the lost income. Repeat annually until desired results achieved.

While some of the decline is likely due to smuggling or ordering online from out of state.

I am sure there are a lot less smokers than their used to be even 5 years ago, plus vaping caught on big in the last 5 years.

Why not put a heavy tax on liquor?

I don't know about Texas but the tax on liquor here in Ohio is pretty stiff.

High taxes lead only to one thing and that is smuggling.

When the taxes get high enough people become willing to defy the law and buy on the Black Market.

Alternative legal markets can also open up like they did here in Ohio. Roll Your Own stores opened that let you buy pipe tobacco in bulk and use the stores cigarette rolling machines to make your own cigarettes. Pipe tobacco not being taxed as severely the customer saved about half the cost of a pack.

Economics of high taxes makes people creative and sometimes lawless.

...Enforcing senseless laws breeds violence and the death of those resisting those laws.

It is even worse that that. This particular law both enriches criminals, and gives a large segment of the population a reason to view criminals more like Robin Hood than like the negative influence on society they are.

Maybe they should really lean on the street corner guys selling loosies. Although that has a downside too.

If they raised the tax to $100 per pack or higher, this shortfall would go away. It works just like the minimum wage (raise it high enough, and workers will get rich)!

/liberal logic

I live upstate near the Indian reservations and business is booming.

The same thing happen here, in Washington State, when the last liberal, retard governor raised the cig. tax. Most of the business went onto the reservation and now, in the stores, there are very limited displays of cigs.

It’s insanity. These places need to run out of other people’s money more than other places.

I’ve never smoked, but Liquor has caused more destruction, heartbreak and death than smoking ever has or ever will. Why not put a heavy tax on liquor?

Most estimates put the per capita death rate from smoking at 3 to 4 times the death rate from alcohol.

The death rates from all illegal drugs combined are merely a footnote to those from tobacco and then alcohol.

They could replace that money by putting more taxes on New YOrk media. since they are in favor of taxing the wealthy and corporations etc why not let them get their wish and pay higher taxes( a lot higher).

“Why not put a heavy tax on liquor?”

When the war on tobacco started in earnest, about 25 years ago, Walter Williams predicted the Nanny State would move on to fast food, firearms, and liquor. Don’t worry, booze is in the on-deck circle . . .

Thank you.

Well, I hope they weren’t fake. Russian cigarettes are incredibly bad. You would be better off smoking rotting cabbage. Seriously.
