I read somewhere that Congress passed an appropriations law which required Battleships and Cruisers to be nuclear powered. It’s just a way around that restriction. Build an electric motor powered cruiser and call it a destroyer.

"That is over 46,000 hp each"

Enough to push 15k tons through the ocean at 35-40kts. Probably 45kts for short duration.

Yeah Right. The Clevelands were 14,000 tons with 100000 hp and could do a shade over 32.

So they’ll fit wave-motion guns instead.

1. 92,000 kw versus 75,000 kw = 25% more power.
2. NO reduction gears to rob energy
3. MUCH more advanced underwater hull design

USN lists their speed at 35kts.

I've never known of an instance when a modern ship would not exceed the max listed speed.

Maybe the hull contributes.

What makes you think it has no guns?
It has two 155 mm/62 caliber Advanced Gun Systems and two 30mm guns.

But I still don’t think they keep them in a warehouse waiting for a buyer.

re:

Why don’t you just use the words ‘rail guns’? Oh, and thanks for being so millenial, and slipping a weblink into your response, instead of typing or thumbing in an answer in your own words.

dear mili,

re:
“It’s going to replace the steam catapults on Navy CVN’s as well.”

THAT would be a worthy use for it!

I am not Generation Y, much less a millennial.
Had you followed the link like an adult, before commenting, you would know that the Zumwalt’s 155mm cannon are not rail guns. These are 6 inch howitzers. Rail guns will be future upgrades.

dear rmlew,

re:
“Had you followed the link like an adult”

If it’s not an article about a B-52, and one preferably that flew from U-Tapao RTNAF, where I was stationed, during the 12 day Christmas Air War of 1972 or Linebacker II, it is a non sequetor.

I appreciate the "I was in the US military, therefore I can do no wrong fallacy". George McGovern and Jimmy Carter would approve. I don't care if you had two Congressional Medals of Honor. Benedict Arnold did more for this country in the US military than you did. He was also a TRAITOR.

Grow up. You were lazy and are sputtering around now looking for excuses. Just admit that you decided to write a response before following a link and doing an iota of research, and then got huffy when called on it. I'll settle for an adult "I'm sorry."
