Man with toy gun killed by Baltimore cop. Should toy guns be illegal?
Christian Science Monitor ^ | 12/21/2015 | By Story Hinckley

An off-duty Baltimore policeman on Saturday shot and killed a man he says appeared to be holding him at gunpoint in the suburbs of Linthicum Heights.

But when Anne Arudnel County detectives surveyed the crime scene, they realized the would-be robber was wielding a toy gun.

“It appears that this is a robbery gone wrong and the officer fired in self-defense,” Anne Arundel Police Lt. Ryan Frashure told WJZ News. “No officer wants to kill anybody much less use his service weapon if he doesn’t have to. This was just an unfortunate series of events.”

~snip~

In November, Mayor Marty Walsh of Boston passed a new law banning realistic-looking toy handguns in public places. Boston officials say in light of rampant gun violence in the US, the threat of toy guns should be taken off the table.

~snip~

Chicago and New York City are also leading the way in the ban against gun replicas. Not only is it illegal to wield a toy gun in public in Chicago – if a toy gun is used to commit a crime in the city the perpetrator is treated as if they used a real firearm.

~snip~

Some gun-control advocates have pointed to these rules as proof that real guns should be subjected to the same scrutiny as replicas. In Dallas, for example, fake guns have been illegal in public places like restaurants and shops since 2007, but carrying real guns in the same establishments is still legal. And in Chicago, Boston, and New York City, the same cities with model fake gun laws, residents with the proper licensing are allowed to carry concealed firearms in public.

They should teach the illegality of armed robbery in elementary school.

Sounds like another failure of Public Education.

Don’t point toy guns at cops. That’s the moral of the story.

I had a friend who lived in a bad neighborhood. She showed me the windows to her bedroom that had attempted break ins.

Then she said she was prepared for them now, and she pulled a plastic pistol out from under her pillow.

I told her she was an idiot!

When toy guns are illegal, only juvenile delinquents will have toy guns.

And pointed fingers, too.

Sure, why not. Now conduct a little thought experiment. Is there any object on the planet that cannot be mis-used in some way and cause confusion, harm, even death? Anything? No. So where does this madness (and it is truly mad) of "banning" things left and right end?

How about with a little common sense? I don't fault the LEO for one second in this - except maybe that he should have fired multiple times. The person that appeared to be pointing a deadly weapon at him was able to run away. He could have just as easily returned fire if he had had a real weapon. Anyway, this incident is 100% on the bad, no, outright stupid choices made by the dead guy. We cannot protect the stupid by banning products/services/behaviors for the rest of us. Dumb people are going to do dumb things and pay the price for it. I'm ok with that. I'd rather dumb people get removed from society by simple stupid things rather than spectacularly stupid things that might hurt the rest of us.

Should they be illegal? Stupid question. Is it wise for anyone over the age of 5 to “brandish” a toy gun in a public place? Probably not!

The crime was armed robbery. The toy gun served its purpose as a means of intimidating the person being robbed. It also served its purpose in provoking an officer to an act of self defense. No pity for the dumbass who chose a toy gun.

...in Chicago – if a toy gun is used to commit a crime in the city the perpetrator is treated as if they used a real firearm.

Talk about a law that's ripe for overturning by an appeals court....

“Robbery gone wrong”????

So.. lemme understand this... according the author’s wording, because a “man a toy gun” was “killed” by a cop, it’s a “Robbery gone wrong”.

That would THEN mean, logically, if the thug-perp had a real gun, killed the off-duty cop (and at least HE’S “allowed” to be armed and has a fighting chance) or some innocent, disarmed-by-law civilian working Joe and got away with it, then it would be a “Robbery Gone Right”???

Or a “Robbery Well Done”???

Or a “brilliantly executed transfer of wealth/redistribution transaction”????

Just asking...

Should toy guns be illegal?

No. If a cop can be deceived by a toy gun, so can an intruder. A lot of crimes are committed simply by an armed citizen brandishing a weapon.

For those who are too skeered to actually own one, a toy one might do the trick in a pinch.

A typical liberal response. When one of their inner city pets gets a ticket to the after life they immediately go after the instrument of travel versus the path the thug walked that got him there.

How does a liberal combat obesity? They ban spoons.
