A four-hour drive from Miami is going to be DRAMATICALLY shortened by high speed rail — to three hours. LOL.

I also laughed at that. When my daughter was just entering college, she decided to take a train trip with some friends to distant cities. She had believed the liberal hype about trains being more efficient and better than cars. When she got back, she said never again, complaining about how inconvenient the trains are nevermind the noise and shaking and loss of time. After that, she drove a car everywhere putting on hundreds of thousands of miles. Cars are more efficient to get you to most places than trains (as you say, door-to-door).

Fascinating story behind “The Wreck Of The Old 97”,sometimes cited as the first million-selling country music release in the American record industry.

Thanks, that’s an interesting story.

I knew several different singers had sung it but had no idea there were as many as were listed in the article.

I’m certain that the engineer had been told to get her to Spencer on time. In 1903 I’d wager safety was not high on railroad supervisors’ lists.

That's the first thing I think of when I hear about their crazy high speed rail plans.

My lib daughter did contract work on urban transit planning in Vancouver, BC after earning her master’s degree. She really believes the world would be a better place if we all used urban mass transit. Of course, she does own a car and greatly enjoys the freedom it gives her. But she still insists we all need to get on buses and trains and sell our cars! Libs!

Sticky problem for nationwide rail system in the US is ownership of the tracks and right of ways. It is just about all privately owned, not gov’t owned like roads and highways.

Big money got into the rail business a long time ago, they are not going to just give away their system, and it is doubtful taxpayers want to pay the price to buy it.

Rail works in Europe, but we are nothing like Europe.

Could we be honest here? First, the US is much larger than any of the European countries, so it isn’t as expensive for them to have rail lines linking their cities and towns, and theirs were built before the enviro-whackos existed, so things could get done.

In most European cities, you can walk out of a train station in the center of the city and be safe. Try that here in the middle of Detroit or Chicago, and you know our politicians would put stations right in the middle of our inner city war zones. Except for NY, US cities are not walkable. You would have to find a way to the train station, and at your destination, find a way to your real destination.

They finally got passenger train service between OKC and Tulsa and it costs $20 (and that is subsidized) and takes 3 hours because it stops in every dinky town between the 2 cities. You can drive it in an hour.

Yeah, only a liberal would love a boondoggle like this. Of course, the real purpose is to create lots of union jobs.

"Of course, the real purpose is to create lots of union jobs."

Not to mention giving more money to cronies.
