Officer's mistrial in Gray's death a letdown for both sides

Instead of a dramatic conclusion to the first of six trials of police officers in the death of Freddie Gray, the mistrial left Baltimore in suspense and confusion, with no immediate understanding of what happens next.

The city had braced for a possible repeat of the protests, destruction and dismay that engulfed the city in April after Gray's neck was broken in the back of a police van. But several small marches ended peacefully overnight as the community tried to process the news.

Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams acknowledged the hung jury Wednesday after the panel deadlocked over whether Officer William Porter had committed any crimes by failing to take measures that might have saved the life of the young black man, who was shackled and placed face down in the wagon after running from police. ...

I heard this Porter guy was going to turn state’s witness against his fellow officers. Any truth to that?

Big disappointment for the “burn America down” crowd.

Does this mean that they don’t get to steal flat screens for Christmas?

Why is it a let-down?

They don’t trust the rule of law or trial-by-jury?

"The state proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Freddie Gray died. Beyond that, they weren't able to prove anything,"

Sounds like the Trayvon Martin case. Politicians demanded prosecution. The prosecutors had to go through the motions although they had squat.

They want to give those who wish to destroy space to do that. Without specifying how much space.

It isn’t a let down except for the State. If there is no guilty verdict tey lose and the defense wins.

AP is spinning this for the “get the cops” crowd.

What would the AP headline have been if verdict was not guilty?

An acquittal would have resulted in riots. A conviction would certainly have been overturned upon appeal at great additional cost, resulting in riots. Now they’ll probably try him again at even greater cost. Resulting in riots.

A city government run by ideologues results in riots. There is no right to un-peaceably assemble to foment rioting; the First Amendment specifies the very opposite.

The hung jury at least lets people know that there is another side to the story. Up to now, only the anti-cop side was being told.
