Why does Houston keep electing Democratic mayors?
CSM ^ | 12/13/15 | By Story Hinckley

Houstonians witnessed a tight race between the two candidates: Turner led King by under two percentage points, 50.96 to 49.04. Turner beat King by 4,000 votes, out of the nearly 212,700 cast.

Turner’s win is a victory for the Democratic party and for Turner himself. The state representative has been looking to the mayoral position for over two decades, with two failed campaigns in 1993 and 2003. Turner will be replacing Democrat Annise D. Parker as mayor of the fourth largest city in the US, where city term limits prohibit fourth terms for mayors.

Snip

“The voting data suggest that people don’t make cities liberal – cities make people liberal,” and the divide between blue city and red countryside continues to grow.

Doesn’t Houston have a lot of black and Hispanic voters, both groups which tend to vote Democrat?

It’s probably all those Katrina “refugees” from N’awlins. One would expect Texans to have more sense than that. Houston is now West N’awlins.

The old adage certainly applies to the low information voters and the Gimmedats in Houston.

If informed people don't think it is important to vote they deserve the government we get.

Thanks to all of the taxpayers that were to lazy to go vote.

But the Democratic trend in Houston goes back long before Katrina.

The Houston elite have always tended to be liberal, too. Over the years, lot of business executives followed the salaries there from California, New York, Chicago, etc.

Black, Hispanic, Asian and a fair number of Arabs and Persians. There are a lot of poor blue collar whites too, who often vote Democrat. The last vestiges of the yellow dog Democrat tradition.

It’s just inner city voters. Same in Dallas. The folks who keep sending Sheila Jackson Lee and Eddie Berniece Johnson to Washington. Not like most of Texas, including the communities that surround Houston.

Because most of the decent people live in one of the suburb towns and not in Houston proper.
