Ted Cruz Sees Boon to His Campaign in Donald Trump
NYTIMES ^ | 12/11/15 | Jonathan Martin Matt Flagengheimer

Senator Ted Cruz has long cheered Donald J. Trump's presence in the Republican presidential field, thanking him for focusing national attention on issues like border security.

Speaking to donors in New York City on Wednesday, Mr. Cruz suggested a more strategic reason to be grateful: Mr. Trump is bending the race in Mr. Cruz’s direction.

"He has framed the central narrative of this primary as, 'Who will stand up to Washington?'" Mr. Cruz, of Texas, said at the private fund-raiser, echoing remarks he has made publicly. "Now if that’s the central narrative, the natural next question is, 'O.K., who has stood up to Washington?'"

Mr. Trump, in this view, has taken a machete through the brush for Mr. Cruz, allowing him to rise quietly despite his own reputation for bombast, while Mr. Trump absorbs the scrutiny a front-runner attracts and eventually peters out, as Mr. Cruz has wagered.

At the same time, in an election season of intense outsider fervor, Mr. Cruz seems to have found, through Mr. Trump, support for his case that his own government experience.. railing against leadership in both parties .. should be seen as a genuine asset. (snip)

Cruz delusionally believes that Trump supporters are going to flock to him once Trump “falls under his own gravity” when people realize he isn’t a serious candidate, according to Teddy. The odds of Trump actually falling are pretty low, but it’s guaranteed that if Trump did fall, it would suck all the energy out of the race. Those supporters will simply return to being non-voters. These aren’t solely committed activists supporting Trump here. It’s regular people, and there’s a reason that Cruz is not getting their support now. He’s been weighed and measured.

Cruz bombastic? Do they know what the word means? He's the anti-bombast. The Left lives in a world of fun house mirrors.

The only energy sucked will be for a small group of delusional FR posters. Everybody else will still be very involved.

Great post.

I think Cruz is Trump-lite. And much softer on immigration, legal and illegal and Muslim.

The only energy sucked will be for a small group of delusional FR posters. Everybody else will still be very involved.

Trump's supporters are blue collar workers, independents, moderates, as well as "very conservative" voters, as well as a large number of non-voters turned voters for the first time this election cycle.

Trump can attract all these people for several reasons: 1) He is seen as a Hero due to his courage in standing up to the media and to the other candidates. 2) Trump has a total control over the media and can bend the narrative any way he wants, a power that no other candidate wields. 3) Trump, consequently, is seen as a strong man, and an independent, an anti-establishment candidate.

Cruz campaigns as an anti-establishment candidate, but he is too well rehearsed, too artificial, too "smooth" and cunning, to ever be believed.

It is a huge leap to jump from high energy Donald Trump to boring, low energy, artificial and measured Ted Cruz. The result will only be mass demoralization and a loss of significant energy and enthusiasm in the race.

Many of Trump’s conservative supporters would migrate to Cruz.
But not all.
And -what’s worse- as of now Cruz isn’t likely to get the large number of moderate supporters of Trump.
