A man and a woman accused of stealing packages before crashing their car in downtown St. Petersburg are in custody at a nearby hospital.

According to police, Derick Corbett, 23, was reportedly taking packages from the front porch of a residence in the 400 block of 9th Avenue NE around 4 p.m.

Renee Prine was jogging by and noticed what was happening.

"At first I just thought he was a Fed Ex delivery man or a UPS man, so I was kind of surprised when I saw him running," she said.

She realized what was happening and called police.

Corbett fled to a car with a woman identified as 21-year-old Casandra Cole inside and sped away from the scene, police said. The officer did not pursue.

A few moments later, the suspect vehicle was involved in a crash at 5th Avenue North and 1st Street with another car. Immediately after the accident, police said Corbett and Cole ran from the car carrying a 6-month-old baby boy, who had a visible head injury as a result of the crash.

Officers responded to the area and located the couple with the infant, who is believed to be their son, in some vegetation in the 200 block of 5th Avenue North.

"By then, our officers are all over the area and when our officer tried to approach them to make the arrest, the man held the baby up as a human shield," said Yolanda Fernandez, with the St. Police Police Department. "And you put this child's life in danger."

The baby was removed, and officers arrested Cole and Corbett.

The couple and the infant have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Corbett is listed as a trauma alert with a head injury, but it does not appear that Cole or the baby have life-threatening injuries, officers said.

Officers did report that the infant did have a significant head laceration when found.

It is anticipated that Corbett and Cole will be charged with burglary, possible from a number of locations as packages from several different addresses were located in the car. Also charges regarding child endangerment will be filed. Corbett, who was driving, will be also be charged with fleeing and eluding, no valid driver's license and leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries.

There's been a rash of "porch pirating" around Tampa Bay lately. These two asshats decided to make it a "take your child to work" day.

I think it would be fun to take an old delivery box, fill it full of dog crap, seal it up and let it sit on the porch.

Just make sure it has an address different from your own, preferably some government office. I guarantee it will ultimately be thrown from a vehicle in a place where littering is not legal...

Driving around with no DL while committing crimes, then getting in an accident when he had already gotten away scot-free from the cops .... the idiocy here is of Obamian proportions!

It's important to start building those family traditions and memories early, especially at the holidays!
