Don' t know a darn thing about prayer rugs or tapestries such as this. But one thing popped into mind right away.

With the reported comings and goings of unidentified men carrying boxes to and fro along with newly discovered contacts by other family members, that mat could serve as a security identifier. Our intel services have problems infiltrating such cells given tight family and tribal ties. A stranger to them could just point to one or more of the arabic script texts as a low tech security check/identifier, much like the 3 digit CC security code. Nothing said in case of taps...kind of like having a one time encryption pad out in the open... and as you say laughing at the stupid infidels.
