I worked as a waiter in a restaurant. The black wait staff could not bear to serve other blacks and avoided them as much as possible. The reason: horrible treatment and tips. White waiters were generally treated and tipped better by black patrons. I think there was a racist feedback mechanism low expectations > treatment > bad service > lower expectations > etc. There are no racists like psychologically projecting racists.
Well, that is not axiomatic. I have used both white and black contractors for several properties, and so have friends. I've been helped and robbed by both types. Contractors in general are a hit-and-miss proposition, and one of the most-frequently sued industry groups by householders. It's imperative to take several bids and always check references. Even then, stuff happens.

When I was growing up, my town was primarily Irish & Scots - and those would be the people stealing your bike (and later your car). Most have left now (the town is heavily Hispanic, with an increasing number of Asians), but I do recall that and know much of our ills are class-based. Most issues in black areas arise from the government’s refusal to treat them as responsible American adults, holding them to a much lower standard.

I never said that they weren’t friendly or said that they were poor drivers.
I said that they often don’t know their way around the city,and they often don’t. It’s happened to me in other places,including Boston (my city).

I’ve never had a problem with that. And with GPS, an intimate knowledge of any city just isn’t necessary.
He claimed he could tell from half a block away whether someone was an American black or not, and he said he made it a point to try never to pick up American blacks.
"But why not?" I asked. "You're black as well."
"Me and other drivers talk, and we all have the same experience," he said.
He told me of a specific example where he picked up an American black man in Manhattan and took him up to Jerome Avenue in the Bronx. "He ran away without paying, and what am I supposed to do? I can't chase him," he said.
He wrote it off as lost income but promised himself not to pick up any more American blacks. He didn't see the irony of his logic...
What Huffington Post doesn't get is that it was NEVER about color (of skin)... It was always about character...
Cabbies didn't pick up American blacks because they feared: not being paid, being robbed or being beaten up. That was true 30 years ago with white cabbies and it's true now with African black cabbies.
The reason cabbies rush to pick up 'the white girl' is because she's (statistically) not a threat, will pay, and tips.
It's Huffington Post that doesn't 'get it'... and never will.
I got to the end of the article and thought- this author is totally clueless.
The owners don’t choose who drives for the fleets. It has nothing to do with race. Most of the medallions in NYC are owned by big fleets. You lease the cab for a 12 hour shift.
Get there at 3:30 in the morning, shove your hack license at the guy behind the window, and have a seat in a room with a bunch of other guys. The guy watches you for about 45 minutes to make sure you’re not drunk or some kind of psycho (called the shape up), then call your name (If you come everyday and they get to know you, they will put you out quicker)
You walk up to the window, pay the lease fee in advance, and are handed the keys. You drive from 5:00 AM to about 4:00 PM, then start heading back to the garage. You gas up and return the cab.
There are few whites doing it because there are not many whites left in NYC that will put in those kind of hours and deal with the abuse from passengers, not to mention the criminals, cops, and the City, who are out to get you too.
Not to mention you don’t start making money for yourself until after you earned enough to cover the lease fee and the gas, which usually happens about 12:00 PM.
No benefits but you have to pay the union every shift, all they do is collect money, not pay it out.
When my daughter (17 years old and Indonesian) left home to go to university in America, she was apprehensive, as she had for so long read about the ‘racism’ in the US.
After she was there for 3-4 months, she asked me “what the hell is wrong with these white people? The blacks and latinos behave like shit, and all the white people do is kiss their arses!”

Do they still have those Haitian cab drivers in Harvard Square? They were the worst. I had a guy yell at me to get out of his cab because I told him what street to go on.
In some cases, the choice might be based economic considerations since blacks have a reputation of being poor tippers.

Sounds like the “Irish Travelers”, they have pulled their scams in many areas. As for myself I try to do everything possible on my own and if I can’t handle it I go by word of mouth as you say. I was born and raised in the “Cradle of the Confederacy” and have had very little trouble with black people but some of those black people have let me know that they trust ME far more than they trust most black people. I treat people as I wish to be treated by them. I don’t tell them what they want to hear, I tell them what I know and believe and I don’t promise what I don’t intend to do but I try to always do more than I promise.
