Maria, 24, a reseller who asked for anonymity because re-selling is illegal, said stores in her neighborhood of central Caracas are adapting to the new buying habits by offering baskets of random bundled goods at a fixed price designed to be swapped on the secondary market.
The government quit releasing its monthly âscarcity indexâ at the beginning of 2014, when the rate hit 22 percent. But since then, analysts and shoppers say the problems only have gotten worse. Polls suggest that shortages are now the countryâs top concern.

But, but, but hugo said............ I hear his daughter is livin' pretty high on the hog though so at least not EVERYBODY is suffering. Coming soon to a neighborhood near you? I mean after all, didn't the lyin' king just apologize for our outrageous consumerism here in the U.S. that's causing a global malaise?

I’m reading a book, “EMP,” about people getting by in rural Indiana following a massive solar electro-magnetic pulse event. Bank accounts are gone. Money is worthless. Bartering is everything.

Most of the karduchian in tune folks have NO idea just how vulnerable we are. Now, back to climate change and the challenge of overcoming it. (Snarkastic remark) :>)

Are the women in Venezuela so stupid that they can’t figure out that they can buy cloth diapers, and launder them, the way women did for centuries.
Amazing.

President Nicolás Maduro has blamed opposition sabotage and international pressure for the crisis. Wreckers and saboteurs, comrades! Uh...haven't we heard this one before?
To: Mears
Ouch. Who else remembers those ammonia filled diaper pails? I don’t think any of our kids felt the touch of pampers or whatever. Now I may end up in grampers but.............

Bartering is also a good idea in our economy. I used to trade regularly with the Liquor Man. He would trade bottles of Grey Goose Vodka for most anything I picked up with coupons. Like aspirin or face moisterizing creams. The Liquor Man had other stuff for barter but I couldn't use more than one of his air hockey tables so I stuck with the Grey Goose. Then I would either drink the Grey Goose or trade for goods and/or services that I needed like carpentry work from a carpenter who was nuts for Grey Goose.
Unfortunately the Liquor Man is now in jail. Not for bartering liquor but on an unrelated murder charge. Since it wasn't first degree murder, I hope you gets out soon (he's already served about 3 years) so I can score more of that Grey Goose. Great stuff!

I am taking up a collection of used sandpaper to be sent to our fellow humanoids in Venezuela to offset their toilet paper crisis.

Exactly. My kids were just fine in cloth diapers. I allowed myself the luxury of disposable diapers when we went camping.
