Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz on Monday credited his surge in the polls to voters recognizing that he wasn't a "campaign conservative" like some of his rivals.
He also vowed not to let his campaign turn into mud-slinging fight with his rivals, especially with front-runner Donald Trump, whom he said the new media begs him to attack almost daily.
"I don't believe Donald Trump is going to be our nominee," he said at a town hall-style meeting in Iowa. "I actually believe the men and women in this room have something powerful to say about it."
He said he was grateful to Mr. Trump for the election about fighting Washington. And he said his record of standing up to not only Democrats but to Republican leaders in Washington distinguished him from his rivals on that measure.
That's why, he said, his campaign had gained momentum in recent weeks.
"We are seeing conservatives uniting behind our campaign," Mr. Cruz said. "And the reason, I think it is quite straight forward, people are tired of what I call campaign conservatives."
He described a campaign conservative as a candidate who can "talk a great game when they are on the stump, but they haven't walked the walk."
Mr. Cruz surged into second place among Iowa voters, nipping at Mr. Trump's heels 25 percent to 23 percent, according to a Quinnipiac University poll last week.
"I'm not going to blast Trump, or anybody else. I'm going to focus on laying out my record and my vision and continuing to unite conservatives," Mr. Cruz said.

Go, Ted, go!
I like the long-game strategy Cruz is taking. It appears Phase II is about to get underway.
GO CRUZ!!!
As do I but I’m not so sure about Trump faltering.
Cruz is running for the nomination - would you really expect him to say that he expects ANYONE else to be the nominee?
Cruz is right. YEAH!
No, but he doesn’t have to say that Trump isn’t going to be the nominee. More than likely, it is he who won’t be the nominee.
Who writes these headlines, Yeb's people?
Class act, always.
It is also highly likely that Trump will not be the nominee. But anything can happen. And anyone still running is going to present themselves as the inevitable nominee. Why do Trump supporters get their nose out of joint over something like this? Cruz did not attack Trump - he actually refused to do so when invited to.

I’m more interested in whom is the real nationalist.
Conservatism wont mean jack if there is no nation, and we are at a point where the nation may not exist in 4 years if something drastic does not happen.
[It is also highly likely that Trump will not be the nominee.]

Someone’s sCruz are loose.
I more or less like Cruz, but there’s something about him I just can’t get comfortable with or trust. Perhaps it’s because he’s a lawyer at heart and always comes across as scripted and overly theatrical. I also don’t think he’s as much of an outsider as he portrays. He too is beholden to Super PACs and donors. I just don’t think Cruz plays well in the general election. Has nothing to do with being conservative. That can win. It has to do with perception and unfortunately Cruz doesn’t play well outside of his conservative base. Trump on the other hand appeals to large portions of the voting public across political and demographic spectrums. We’ll see he it plays out.
The Donald has demonstrated repeatedly that he is not only a very high profile person with a depth of support others can only hope for, he can take hits that would have long ago sunk a much more “conventional” candidate. Just on the novelty factor alone, The Donald has inspired a lot of interest that no other candidate can or has tapped into.
Nobody, but nobody, can beat him on name recognition alone, and add that to his delivery of something like a stump speech to hammer the same themes over and over, and apparently resonates with a LOT of people who ordinarily do not even pay attention to any political race, are at least perking up their ears.
The Donald shall come out of Iowa with a very decent showing, as shall Ted Cruz, but it won’t be definitive, by any means.
Any candidate who wants to win the nomination obviously should be able to say that he doesn’t think Candidate So-and-so is going to win. That just stands to reason, and it’s certainly not insulting or inflammatory.
Ted “crows” lol.
