Since he was a boy, Senator Ted Cruz has said, all he wanted to do was "fight for liberty" - a yearning that he says was first kindled when he heard his fatherâs tales of fighting as a rebel leader in Cuba in the 1950s, throwing Molotov cocktails, running guns and surviving torture.
Those stories, retold by Mr. Cruz and by his father, Rafael, have hooked Republican audiences and given emotional power to the message that the Texas senator is pushing as an increasingly serious contender for the party's presidential nomination. In their telling, the father's experience in Cuba - when the country was swept up by the charismatic, young Fidel Castro, only to see him become a repressive Communist dictator â becomes a parable for the son's nightmarish vision of government overreach under President Obama.

"To repeat statements from Communist officials in Castro's Cuba regarding events from nearly 60 years ago as truth is irresponsible reporting and simply has no basis in truth," Catherine Frazier, a campaign spokeswoman, said in a statement.
Jason Horowitz clearly wants to make Cruz look bad.
Rehash of nothing. What a feeble attempt to smear someone. Go Trump/Cruz
Are Freepers actually reading the NYT’s?
Piss off NY Slimes
The only people who care about whether Ted Cruz’s father helped Castro overthrow the Batista regime are the Commies who run the NY Times.
No surprise that the NY Slimes and Jason Horowitz would come up with a hit piece like this, the enemedia are trying to outdo each other.
Nah; we just get these little blurbs here so we can make fun of the Old Gray Whore.
Sounds good by me!
When ya gotta rely on old commies to trash a conservative.....
Does the New York Times have editors?
(I think this makes The New York Times look bad. Not that they need much help.)
Here you go. Now YOUR guy is in the cross hairs of the slime machine.
Don’t ask for any help defending him. You were more then willing to embrace these slander and lie tactics when you thought it would help you.
(2) I said months ago that the Cruz campaign should nail down all the details of Rafael Cruz's personal narrative before the pro-Castro MSM delved more deeply into it. Just because it shouldn't matter doesn't mean that the MSM won't try to make it matter.
The weak sauce is strong in this one young Jedi......
I read these articles and I imagine myself watching these so called journalists melt like in the Wizard of Oz.
Can’t wait until these people are treated like the dogs they are.
So where are all your predictions now the slime machine is starting to focus on YOUR guy?
$ 50 ... put up or shut up ... no guts, no glory ... afraid ?
Well, if the Slimes is so concerned about possible “fudging” of the truth about Cruz’ father’s activities 50 years ago, I’m sure they are just about to launch an aggressive investigation into Hillary Clinton’s activities 25 years ago. Right???
Where’s your “Benjamin” for Dr. Ben Carson ...
or are you just a fast talking “exaggerator” like your favorite (un-criticizeable) candidate ?
You don’t get it. They start with the weakest story and move inward. This is just the 1st shot of the barrage.
