The European Court of Human Rights has ruled the KGB murders of Lithuanian partisans was not an act of genocide.

The ruling may become an important legal precedent in the evaluation of Soviet atrocities

The ECHR ruled that former KGB officer, Vytautas Vasiliauskas, had been sentenced in Lithuania in June 2011 "on legal provisions that had not been in force in 1953.”

If every act of war or repression is classed as “genocide,” then “genocide” means nothing.

I see.

I’m not arguing that the Russians (and many others) have done a lot of bad things. However, it’s not “genocide” every time a lot of people get killed. Sometimes it’s just war, or the typical killing-people that oppressive and aggressive governments engage in.

For comparison, in a very different context, not every unwelcome or unpleasant sexual interaction is “rape.” If everything is “rape,” then rape doesn’t mean anything.
