when is the last time the South voted for a Republican Yankee?

Hasn't every Republican nominee come from a "Yankee" background? If there is an exception, I can't think of whom it might be.

Tancredo is the best. He had the courage to stand nearly alone against the Bush amnesty. And won!

That makes more sense- Trump’s position on illegal immigration is similar to Tancredo’s a decade ago. Cruz hasn’t committed himself in what he would do the illegals here. He saw he’s not for amnesty, but McCain said the same thing. Anything other than making them leave IS forgiving them (definition of amnesty) and putting them ahead of those playing by the rules.

Who said he’s becoming a Democrat?

He’s fought for conservative principles for decades, usually alone. He was trying to protect this country when this website was backing W and amnesty, I’ve been told by people that left here or were banned because they weren’t for amnesty. (And I checked their posts and it’s true.)

Tancredo isn’t the hypocrite or the enemy. If he was given support a decade ago, we’d be having a different discussion.

If not a Democrat (as the post implies) then what? An Independent?

He could do the same thing I did - I didn’t register at all after I quit the Republican party after Boohoo was voted in again last January. Now I’m in a state where I don’t need to specify a party to vote.

Ya, same here. I re-registered as an Independent.

In some states, you can't vote for state/local elections unless you align with a party. Texas is semi-closed with no party registration, meaning you choose the party in which to vote that election cycle, up to but not including the general election. Our state and local election results have been trending Republican/conservative in recent cycles, which is encouraging. You'd miss out on these votes if you stayed away from party affiliation.

[roamer_1:] when is the last time the South voted for a Republican Yankee?

Hasn't every Republican nominee come from a "Yankee" background? If there is an exception, I can't think of whom it might be.

It isn't my forte, and I would submit, doesn't matter until Reagan and 'the Southern Strategy' - The rise of Conservatism. Reagan was a midwestern boy (Illinois, I think), and a Western man (California). The Bushes - While I realize their native connections to Connecticut and DC, The Bush family was primarily Texas based (or could legitimately claim it). McCain 'settled' in Virginia, but after his service, moved to Arizona, which was his residence for the majority of his adult life (again, he could at least legitimately claim being a Western man). Romney was born in Michigan, but his adult life was primarily Bostonian.

Reagan and both Bushes claimed Conservatism, and relied heavily upon it for the win, Reagan and George W especially, with much of their homegrown appeal generated from candid shots of them working on their respective ranches, and wearing western apparel...

McCain greatly damaged himself with Conservatives after 2000, and during his campaign, but tried to make up for it with Palin (again a Western woman). But it was already too late, due to his !UP! the middle campaign.

Romney tried to cut a deal with Conservatives, but had way too much liberal baggage, and had a Massachusetts mentality...

So no - Romney is the only nominee with a 'Yankee background'. And he lost the general, even after Obummer's first term, when the country was looking to stop him...

No, Yankees are not trusted in the South, nor, I would submit, in the West.
