I HAVE known Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria, since he was a college student in London, and have spent many hours negotiating with him since he has been in office. This has often been at the request of the United States government during those many times when our ambassadors have been withdrawn from Damascus because of diplomatic disputes.

Bashar and his father, Hafez, had a policy of not speaking to anyone at the American Embassy during those periods of estrangement, but they would talk to me.

Still, I’d rather have Assad in charge than ANY group fighting him, besides the Kurds, and i’m not even sure if the Kurds are in this fight.

I know they’re fighting in Iraq and near Turkey.

Assad kept Christians relatively safe and slaughtered muslims who got uppity. who cares about that?

I reluctantly agree. The opposition is either ISIS, or rebels who - if they win - will be pushed aside by ISIS.

I think that's true. He is quite ill.

Carter is a very naive person. And that naivety has hurt a lot of people. But unlike many leaders on the world stage today, I believe that he is a good person, with good intentions. He is in my prayers.

Really, it isn’t the length of the plan that matters. It is having a plan at all. Better just to wing it.
