Donald Trump’s baseless claim that the Bush White House tried to ‘silence’ his Iraq War opposition
Washington Post ^ | 21 Oct 15 | Michelle Ye Hee Lee

This Trump brag line goes like this: He had the vision and foresight to oppose the Iraq War ahead of the invasion in 2003. His opposition was so vocal, and his reach so great, that the White House approached him and asked him to tone it down.

Really? We examined the slim evidence.

The Facts

At The Fact Checker, we place the burden of proof on the speaker. Trump has not responded to repeated requests by us or other media outlets for proof of his early opposition to the invasion.

Military action began on March 20, 2003. An extensive review of 2003 news coverage prior to March 20 surfaced just two references of Trump and his views on the invasion, as BuzzFeed News found during the GOP debate. The Huffington Post also wrote an analysis of Trump’s Iraq claims during the GOP debate, and again after Trump’s claims in October. There was a two-sentence reference in a March 25, 2003, article in The Washington Post’s coverage of the Oscars after-party:

Like most cults, the leader must pretend he's also a prophet, a man with exceptional powers to see the future not matched by others. It's amusing to see so many fall for it.

Prophets I associate with things spiritual, maybe a better word or alternative is a Visionary...

This is mentioned frequently in the Bible as we “see” with Gods help through the Holy Spirit to what can be...

Not what Will be which is more associated with Prophecy...

To be an effective leader Vision is a requirement in my book...

A dearth of it in Corporations globally...

True leadership???

Hens teeth come to mind as to it’s saturation in that arena...

Politics seems to have a mandatory lack of the real thing, instead playing horror movies and cadging us about how cool that would be....

Zombies...

The biggest problem people have with the Trump haters is they think it has anything to do with Trump. Mostly it doesn’t.

It has to do with the fact that he is saying he will close the border and deport the illegals. He says it will be his first task followed by tax reform. If he just does the border and deportations people will be thrilled.

Beyond that people have the rational belief that he would be no worse than any other presidential candidate, at least any with a reasonable chance of beating Hillary and getting elected. He might even be a damn site better.

He will also be uncompromisingly pro-American & will be unafraid to fight back against Americas critics, particularly by the ankle biters in the media & our adversaries on the World stage . Something we have been solely lacking for the last decade.

Trump played the media on this.

They are tying the one guy with money - Jeb - to an unpopular war and his currently unpopular brother. Jeb is stuck defending the record of his brother. It makes him look weak, old hat, and a move backwards.

Looking backwards it is easy to see 20-20...

Or maybe not all is there to be seen ...

Saudis, Clintons and that whole imbroglio is still rattling around...

I’m leaning toward Trump due to his border policy.

I don’t pay much attention to his attack on Bush. Bush is an easy target these days, not many people want to defend him. Clinton made a mash of things with Al Qaeda, and Obama made a mess of things in Iraq, but its easy to lay it all off on Bush.

I believe Trump would have had even less patience with Saddam than did GW. Given the same situation, he’d have done the same thing sooner.

No a showman, he is a great communicator...

Anyone who has spent any meaningful time in font of a client or an audience and convey and idea clearly and succinctly. Moreover, talk is indeed cheap and that “Showman” Showed YOU and all the doubters that he not only talks the talk but walks and has walked the walk...

So tell us all again please without any slogans or labels (so progressive to do that, everybody has to have a box or label, no exceptions!) why you prefer Candidate X versus someone who has and can actually get something done!!!!!!

Thx

Yuu think about that a bit. Brilliant. Then think about those who sit here on freerepublic and whine about Trump. Pathetic.

As far as I’m concerned, that’s the prevailing thought in favor of Trump.

Trump is a hell of a fighter. And he’s going to need all the fight he can muster to win the presidency. We are in Orwellian times. The media is powerful and evil. Trump is the new David and I hope he will have the same outcome as the famous Goliath fighter.

That is a lie. If anything, Bush made zero effort to counter opposition. He let the media be dominated by opposition.

Jeb is at 5%. So, even if people do blame him for his brother’s actions, which is doubtful, he is helping Jeb by getting his name in the media more. At 5%, Jeb was dying on the vine until Trump tossed him this life preserver.
<P<Of all the many, many criticisms I have of Jeb, his brother causing 9/11 is not one of them. There are so myriad ways to go after Jeb, using this ridiculousness doesn’t hurt him at all.

Instead of pontificating, do some real work, and read his books. Depending on liberal media like WAPO is not the best path to truth.
