Republican lawmaker mounting campaign for Senate (Maryland)
The Baltimore Sun ^ | September 28, 2015 | John Fritze

high-ranking Republican state lawmaker from Baltimore County is building a campaign for U.S. Senate, giving some state GOP leaders hope that the party can compete for the seat now held by retiring Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski.

Del. Kathy Szeliga, the minority whip in the House of Delegates, is alerting fellow Republicans that she plans to seek the seat, despite the advantage Democrats will have in Maryland next year. Her effort is drawing early support from some of the state's best-known GOP figures.

Republicans, a minority in Maryland, will face steep odds in the Senate race next year, when the presidential election is likely to spur more Democrats to the polls. Low turnout in Baltimore and Montgomery and Prince George's counties last year helped Republican Larry Hogan upset Democratic Lt. Gov. Anthony G. Brown in the governor's race.

But Szeliga and her supporters — including Rep. Andy Harris of Baltimore County, for whom she once worked, and Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh — insist there is a path to victory for the GOP, just as there was for Hogan.

"We have the right message; it just has not always been communicated well," said Szeliga, 53, a Perry Hall woman who was first elected to the General Assembly in 2010. "Over on the Democratic side, voters can pick one career politician or another."

With Kathy Szeliga in the running, Republicans at least have a feasible candidate who can make a decent showing. An actual victory by her is unlikely. Yet it is possible under the right set of circumstances.

I hope Maryland Freepers make her election a priority.

Wish we had someone decent in PA to challenge Casey.

BTW, the credible GOP challenger to Casey in 2012, Tom Smith, just died on Sunday (so had he won, Gov. Wolf would’ve appointed a Dem to the vacancy).

It’s time for everyone to become active in this upcoming election. Everyone is big-time pissed and disgusted. Primary all DC vermin and find a conservative candidate to replace them with! Trump has the masses stirred up and he needs our help. Clean the sewer of all RATs and RINOs.

Don’t panic, yet. The GOP has a lot bigger farm team than the Dems do in PA.

Bull crap. People in Maryland had had enough of the way Democrat Party governors were running the state into the ground. The "Rain" tax was the last straw. That's what liberals at the Washington Post will never admit. Unfortunately the successful results of the governors race didn't translate into success for the Senate and House of Delegates races. Maryland voters are still rather stupid when it comes to electing statehouse representatives.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I've emailed Casey, tweeted that he wasn't elected to represent PA Democrats, he's supposed to represent us all. Yet he's unshakable in his loyalty to his Führer. .

Sounds like a polar opposite to Mikulski. Without a charismatic black at the top of the ticket (like Obama), I doubt turnout in Baltimore will be as high as it was in the last two cycles.

“Kathy and her husband, Mark, started a construction general contracting business 27 years ago. Kathy understands how difficult it is to start and maintain a small business in Maryland’s tough business climate. Kathy is committed to being a strong voice for all small businesses.
Maryland Business for Responsive Government, the political business watchdog group in Annapolis, awarded Kathy the Blue Ribbon award in 2013. She maintains an A rating with this group for her consistent conservative votes against higher taxes and more unnecessary regulations.”

“Delegate Kathy Szeliga has dedicated her life to her family, their family business, and the citizens of Baltimore and Harford Counties. Her faith is the basis on which she lives her life. Kathy’s involvement in business, government, education, church, cultural and civic activities in Maryland has been diverse and extensive and helps to make Kathy an effective Maryland State Delegate.”

Trump has my support. He is the one with a plan. “Make America Great Again.” This country desperately needs to get back to what made it great. Trump understands this. Lets roll.

Too bad he doesn’t show unshakeable loyalty to his late FATHER. Bob Casey, Sr. may have been a lefty, but he wasn’t a monster and was more pro-life than a lot of Republicans.

For those who think a Szeliga victory is impossible, I have two words: Larry Hogan.

(And yes, I read the part about fewer Democrats turning out last year.)

Folks can help her out by calling a talk show that airs in Maryland, or write an editor’s letter if you live there.
