Turkey rejects offer of EU membership in exchange for halting refugee influx

Turkey has brushed off the offer of EU membership in exchange for halting the refugee influx as “bribery”, hours after European leaders sought to buy the country’s co-operation at a price of £2 billion.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the man Europe hopes can hold back a vast new wave of migrants, ridiculed an offer of visas, cash and a fresh chapter of accession talks drawn up by European leaders last night.

If Brussels wants his co-operation, nothing less than full EU membership will do, the president said, adding that the offer did not appear to be “sincere”.

“The West and Europe's security and stability is contingent on our security and stability. They have accepted this now. So if it can't happen without Turkey, why don't you take Turkey into the EU? The problem is clear but they are not open,” he said. Mr Erdogan’s determination to drive a hard bargain with Europe came as Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, prepared to travel to Turkey this weekend to try build momentum for a workable deal with Ankara.

Europe would be insane to take Islamist Turkey into the EU...under ANY circumstances and agreements.

The stunning degree to which the EU is pathetic and weak is clearer with each passing day.

Even more insane to have them in NATO. I would rather have had the Russians have them.

We don’t have to take Turkey. The insane Brussels with Merkel in tow are going to relax visas for Turks coming here.

So we might get less Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans but we’ll now get potentially millions more Turks.

I mean, you cannot make this stuff up.

Turkey should never have been allowed to join NATO. They stopped being the secular Turkey of Atatürk a long time ago.

They should just lie and start allowing refugees to pass through once they are a member. Of course, EU membership isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

Seeing as how this entire problem is a direct result of their failed imperial/colonial policies, it’s the least they could do. The Turks should handle every single refugee, if we were to use leftist logic in a consistent manner. Oh, but the Turks aren’t wh....... well, I guess that doesn’t work. It’s Europe’s problem, and America’s. My bad. I forgot the rules.

This is really crazy! During the 90’s and the 00’s the EU didn’t want Turkey in the EU because it was a Muslim, not a Christian nation. Now, mind you, this was when the Kemalist were still in charge before the Islamist made their move. Now, the EU is inviting Muslims to invade their countries and inviting a totally Islamist Turkey to join the EU if it would only stop the invasion!

We are truly in the End of Days! Maranatha!

Turkey is full-on murdering Orthodox Christian clergy, and has been for a long time.

Turkey is the nation where the pan-world jihadis, the would-be ISIS fighters fly to. They land at Turkish airports, ride in buses to the Turko-Syrian border, and cross over and join ISIS. Ankara is fully aware of this, and promoting it, as they want to destabilize Syria.

Turkey has turned its back on its more secular history in the last few years and has embraced hardline Islam without any regret.

Turkey is not only supporting ISIS in the South, but is assisting in the EU invasion to the north by passing along refugees. Turkey is not the West's friend, it is current our chief enemy.

Time we treated her as such!

If I'm understanding this correctly, the EU might take in Turkey, if Turkey accepts billions of dollars to keep refugees (I prefer "invaders"). But what happens if Turkey takes the Muslims and the money, and after a process they become citizens. As citizens in the EU, can't they wander freely all over Europe?

It makes no sense whatsoever. The money would be better spent returning the hordes to their homelands, and keeping them out of Europe.

No way can Europe solve the problem if they stay. Look at the gypsy problem....hasn't that problem been around since the middle ages? Is Merkel's solution going to be to bribe all the poor countries in the EU to take HER problem? Long term how does it work for the comparatively small portion of Europe that will be spared?

And this is dealing with Erdogan when he's been weakened by Turkey's most recent election. Obviously foreign policy geniuses are not confined to the US.

Turkey is the cork in the bottle, or rather, it was. My guess is, the associate membership Turkey has been offered in the past will continue to be rejected, and why not? Turkey's past gov'ts have rejected it, and Erdogan has been saying 'no' for ten years. Hey, y'know what might sweeten our same old offer? Desperation! If we let him know how desperate we are for him to accept this lower-status almost-membership, he'll say yes this time! Great idea! Let's book a flight to Ankara!

If he gets Turkey into the EU as a full member, his domestic political standing will improve. Anyone have any problem with that? No? Okay, Angela will agree to it. As part of any deal, the EU will have to agree to sanctions on and further condemnations of Israel. Any one have any problems with that? Hell no! They'll rush to meet those terms.
