As a young man, those crisp fall mornings standing on the ramp with a hot cup of coffee in my hand, as the sun rose, getting ready to work Alleghany Commuter’s Beech 99’s and Metro’s are some of my best memories.
Ah, college days...
Although my first flight experience was a little later than yours it was much the same.
Not a lot of people flew back in the day. It was a special experience.
I can see it returning to that eventually. It’s expensive without the perks.
Myself, I haven’t flown since pre 911. It was a chore even then.
Golden age of air travel ended 9/11/2001.
Coming back from England on a supposedly last US AIR flight from England I, an old guy, got mixed up with a bunch of scholastic type American rugby players. We participated in a massively drunken flight with a wink, wink, nod, nod from the flight attendants. Hung over by Philly. Good bunch of guys.
We used to call Allegheny — Agony Airlines.
When Allegheny became US Air, Agony became US Scare.
USAIR once had a virtual monopoly on air travel from Pittsburgh, so they could treat their passengers like cattle. Then the other airlines came in, but USAIR continued to treat their passengers shabbily. Then they complained because passengers bolted for Southwest and other airlines.
So long USAIR. I won’t miss you. I just hope American doesn’t pick up your bad habits.
Goodbye Useless Airlines, you will not be missed.
Was once a major part of Pittsburgh, which has lost half of its population since 1950, and was once a major city (in the 1980s we were #3 in Fortune 500 headquarters, IIRC). (at various times was in the top 10). US Air used to be one of the largest employers here, and we used to have one of their major hubs... I remember when it was Allegheny in the 1960s and 1970s...
Things are looking up since US Air bailed on the 'burgh!
The last time I was on U.S. Airways for a weekend trip, my new luggage apparently went on vacation to another country for a few months. It came back the worse for wear.
“My first flight was in 1955 from Boston to Oklahoma City.
It was luxurious.
We had real china, great food, and lots of room in the seats and on the plane.
No jets then,so no jet way. We walked across the tarmac to the plane and climbed the stairs.
I was dressed up,of course. No casual wear on planes in those days.”
Sounds like an Air Emirates ad.
Don’t forget Slohawk (Mohawk) too
I always fly in coat and tie. I hate looking like some old wino. The cabin crew appreciates it also and I get positive attention
The didn’t abandon is, Fast Eddie made them move to Philly as a gift to his political cronies. I firmly believe that... He made them an offer they couldn’t refuse
Bingo. Now we have Sharia based TSA kubuki theater to participate in. I decline to play.
I went to college in Pittsburgh and so Agony Airlines was my ride. I remember the college rate for the one-hour flight was $19 back in the early 70s. Many, many crazy stories, especially involving Thanksgiving and Christmas trips in snowy weather. Going out to Pittsburgh International on the airport bus, you just knew you were probably going to end up sleeping in the terminal that night. Or getting together with fellow travelers and renting some sort of large vehicle for the death-defying trip over the Agony mountains. I have a hazy memory of once being involved in a Winnebago rental, but I’m trying to figure out how we rented a Winnebago in a shut-down airport.
Last month I had to fly from Ontario CA to Columbia SC. The first leg was on American, the last leg was on US Air. When I checked in at Ontario, the American employee would only check my luggage and give me my boarding passes for the American leg. She told me to claim my luggage when I changed planes and check in with US Air to continue on to Columbia.
So I went to the US Air counter and told the US Air employee what the American employee had done. The US Air employee exploded and went to the American counter and went full bore R. Lee Ermey on the American employee. Then she came back to me and checked my luggage and gave me boarding passes to Columbia SC. I am eternally grateful to that US Air employee.
“Sounds like an Air Emirates ad.”
LOL
One of my grandsons actually has a T shirt, which he wears frequently, that says “Fly Emirates”.

It’s always astonishing to see supposed conservatives on a supposedly conservative forum longing for the “good ol’ days” of socialism.
