Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said black lives matter and called for an end to institutionalized racism during the Democratic presidential debate Tuesday night. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton praised President Barack Obama's handling of race issues and called for more body cameras and an end to criminal justice policies that target black men.
The exchange was part of a focus on black and other minority voters during the event held in Nevada, an important swing state where elections are often won by non-white voters. "We need a new New Deal for communities of color," Clinton said.
During the debate, former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley defended his record in Baltimore, where he was a two-term mayor before riots broke out in May over the police-involved death of Freddie Gray, a black youth, in April. Critics have claimed that O'Malley's tough-on-crime policies prompted the riots. While there was a sharp reduction in the number of homicides during his service from 1999 and 2007, the number of arrests in Baltimore spiked in 2005, according to a Washington Post report. O'Malley said there were 30 years of peace before the unrest.
"We've saved over a thousand lives in Baltimore in the last 15 years of people working together," he said. "And the vast majority of them were young and poor and black. It wasn't easy on any day. But we saved lives and we gave our city a better future, improving police and community relations every single day that I was in office."
O'Malley also said black lives matter and lamented how poor, black youths have been ignored. He said the nation had to a lot to do to end racial injustice.
Meanwhile, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb defended his criticism of affirmative action policies, even as moderator Anderson Cooper pointed out that the party is increasingly comprised of non-white voters.
Most Americans weren't aware the debate was being held Tuesday night, according to a Reuters/Ispos poll. Hours before the event, more than half of U.S. registered voters said they did not know about the event to be held at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas. Roughly 45 percent of voters registered as Democrats knew of the debate. The poll had a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. In contrast, more than 23 million viewers watched CNN's three-hour Republican debate last month.
Clinton was leading the primary before the debate. She was polling at 41 percent, down from 51 percent, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted between Oct. 4-9. Trailing behind her was Sanders, with 28 percent support up from 24 percent.
Many Twitters used pointed out that the Democratic field was made up of only white candidates.
White Privilege = Ideological conformity and questionable late 19th Century political philosophy
“criminal justice policies that target black men”??
Scary thing is these clowns really believe that stuff.
I’d like Hillary to walk through the streets of Chicago some night....without body guards.
“I didn’t watch the all white debate tonight. Were they just spewing a lot of white privilege.”
The only one who was somewhat sane was Webb.
Linc Chafee did run true to form and proved that he is somewhat qualified to be a school crossing guard’s assistant.
The Cackling Cankle, the Commie and the Creep had the collective appeal of a festering carbuncle. They were tough on the ears.
So we have Clinton, decrying perverts and sex addicts.
We have Bernie Sanders, who’s wife is embezzling from the college she works for wanting more money for schools.
We have O’Malley bragging about Baltimore even as it sinks into the ocean.
And we have an American public who thinks these people are just great and can’t wait to have more of what they’re selling.
*shakes head*
I didn't hear about that.
All I heard from there is that, with the exception of Webb, Dem presidential candidates don’t think my life or the lives of my children matter.
Would they believe the Ex Texas A&M player who slashed a “random” person to death yesterday should not be in prison because he is black?
I really hate these politicians and I would rather one of those people had been the black bastards victim rather than the jogger.
They’re all outbidding each other on how much more money to steal from the rotting corpse of the middle class.
Their comments on race were frightening.
With the entire government, media & academia at their beck and call, yet these buffoons are unable to find one instance or single shred of evidence to prove that such policies exists in all the police forces in all the land...
Not to worry - CNN didn't notice.
And if CNN did notice (considering the moderators were also white liberal elites) they were ‘connected’ enough NOT to say anything about it. White liberal elites work together...
Bernie left Brooklyn which is almost 30% black to work against the institutionalized racism in Vermont which is 1.4% black.
“I didn’t watch the all white debate tonight.”
Imagine a group of incompetent losers (except Jim Webb) who have never had real jobs promising to take from the rich and give to the poor and exempt black thugs from arrest no matter what they do.
Jim Webb was way out of place on that stage - he’s a former Marine who actually has some character.
Webb is a bit different from the rest of them — although I’d still rather have a real conservative. But Webb’s clearly the best of the Democrat field.
All lives matter.
