Gov. Scott Walker to appoint new Supreme Court justice within days

Stoughton -- Gov. Scott Walker said he could appoint a new justice to the Wisconsin Supreme Court by the end of this week.

"I interviewed all three of the applicants yesterday," Walker told reporters at a high school here Thursday.

The Republican governor said he would make his decisions "probably in the next couple days because you’ve got oral arguments coming. I think it’s important for the people of the state. They want the court to be filled. They don’t want a long-term vacancy on the Supreme Court."

Three people have asked Walker to put them on the state's highest court to replace Justice N. Patrick Crooks, who died last month. Applying by Friday's deadline were Appeals Judge Rebecca Bradley, Madison attorney Claude Covelli and Dane County Circuit Judge Jim Troupis.

Bradley is one of three candidates who announced she was running for Crooks' seat before he died. The other two — Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Joe Donald and Appeals Judge JoAnne Kloppenburg — declined to apply and said they believed it would be inappropriate for the governor to appoint someone who was running for the seat.

Bradley is backed by conservatives in next year's race for the seat. Walker appointed her to the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in 2012 and the District 1 Court of Appeals this May.

Troupis was a longtime go-to attorney for Republicans and served as a lead attorney for Justice David Prosser's campaign in 2011 when there was a recount. Walker this May appointed Troupis to the Dane County bench, and Troupis said then he would not run for a full term on that court.

In an interview last week, Troupis declined to say whether he was considering running for the state Supreme Court next year. He did not return a call Monday.

This is the same guy that many here hated. Sad! I don’t understand some here at all. He would make an incredible President but no they just don’t like him. Weird.

Wisconsin Supreme Court justices should wear body cameras when in chambers.

Like most of us said at the time...we’re happy to have him back.

Rebecca Bradley will look real good on the WISSC for a long time to come.

I LOVE Jim Troupis, but I will settle for R. Bradley. Either will be a WIN for our side!

JoAnne Kloppenburg. Oh. My. God. What a NIGHTMARE THAT election was when she ran against David Prosser!

I’m now officially having *FLASHBACKS*

Aarrgghhhhhh! :)

Until a year ago I lived in Wisconsin. I voted for Walker in each of his elections and also during the recall. He is a good man and has done wonderful things in Wisconsin, despite the relentless bitching and moaning from the libtardii that infests the capitol and surrounding areas.

That said, I was hopeful early on that his campaign would catch on, but it didn't. Lots of factors at play, but in the end, he simply wasn't ready for the national stage yet. He's young and there is more work to do in Wisconsin.

I hope Walker stays in the game, he is a fighter and we need them.

Exactly. The disdain for Walker started mainly after Lord Trump arrived on the scene.

I would be very surprised if he gave another try on the national stage. Voters like reality-TV interaction an all the drama that goes with it. Walker’s too low-key for that.

Applicants? Where can I get an application, I'd like to be a Supreme Court Justice in Wisconsin.

Can I still wear my 49ers Jersey though?

Sorry. Applications were due last Friday. You could still qualify for the us Supreme Court, however, as the justices are not even required to be attorneys.

Well that is true. Just still disappointed. Hopefully in 2024, he will be more prepared. We might even need him more then.

I know. This is our election to lose. Democrats have not won 3 Presidential Elections in something like 70 years. I can see that trend breaking due to complete and utter stupidity of Republicans.

It’s often said that the person who would do a good job doesn’t get the chance. I’ve been impressed with Walker, and he surely has work left to do in Wisconsin lest it slip back to the DFL ( Farm RATs). I don’t think he did himself a whole lot of good trashing Trump on his way out the door though.
Says to me that given the chance, he’d be a GoPeer.
