They are a Saudi/Turk/State operation.
They were armed by the west and when they swept into Iraq they inherited all the equipment helpfully stockpiled by departing US troops. Then when they launched further eastward, the US-armed Iraqi army helpfully abandoned all of its equipment.
So they are the best equipped army in the region, with all of our best stuff. Well financed by Qatar and the Saudis, and now they have Iraq’s oil. So they are doing fine. Funny, lawyers went to court to keep the Kurds from selling Iraqi oil but ISIS manages to sell it without any problems.
