New York and New Jersey drivers account for nearly one-third of all toll revenues amassed across the U.S., a new report says.
Drivers in New York and New Jersey pay the heftiest price for their commutes — accounting for almost one-third of all tolls collected across the U.S., a new report says.
The report, which was released by the International Bridges, Tunnels and Turnpike Association, indicated that drivers in the two states forked over an astounding $4 billion of the $13 billion in tolls accrued across the country.
“The primary reason (for New York and New Jersey drivers paying the highest tolls) would be the concentration in the region of bridges and tunnels connecting the greater New York metro area,” said Neil Gray, director of government affairs at IBTTA.
“The facilities have been in place for a long time, they were very expensive to build, they are expensive to maintain and they are tremendously expensive to replace.”

Good for them. Triple or quadruple the tolls, IMHO.
Uh, no. The primary reason is that both states have voracious spending habits that need to be supported by sucking money out of every single person who either lives in or goes through the state in any way possible, and hitting up drivers for expensive tolls a thousand times while they travel from Point A to Point B is one way to do that.
Ya, but the toll system creates a beaurocracy that is unionized and pays fo rthe Democratic leadership. The gas tax is much more efficient.
Uh no. The reason the bridges and tunnels costs a small fortune to cross is because a large portion of the money is siphoned off for other uses, for example, to support mass transit and bloated bureaucracies.
It’s those Turnpikes and paying your way into New York City. That town can take money out of your pockets faster than your wife.

4 billion a year? Man, that would build a lot of bridges - if it was ever used for that.
My initial thought as well. However, government power to tax must be controlled. The big question is how do we control the power to tax?

Many, many Howie Carr columns on this specific nugget over the years. The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority was paid for three times over but extended forever via bond issues with nothing to do with highways - over and over and over again. It’s nothing but a dumbocrat featherbed.
What the hell ever happened to our flying cars?
No kidding. Biggest “pay raise” I got was switching from a school in Staten Island and coming back to Brooklyn. As a Brooklyn resident, I didn’t get a discount for working in Staten Island. (The reverse would get a discount.) with EZPass, it was still about 12 bucks per day that I’m not paying any more.
Okay but consider the roads they get to drive
While upstate’s bridges are corroding to the point of being unsafe tolls & gas tax is funneled to NYC. FUAC.
Small price to pay to live in their idea of paradise... Seems like they should be paying even more, IMO.
