Some had a taste for adventure. Others wanted to test their courage. And while the 28 Americans aboard the El Faro container ship are a dedicated and diverse crew, one thread seems to run through each of their lives a love for the sea.
The ship's owner has not released a list of all 33 crew members, including five Polish nationals, who were lost when the vessel presumably sank Oct. 1 just as Hurricane Joaquin thrashed the waters off the coast of the Bahamas.
So far, only one body has been recovered in the search. But family members have been holding out hope that the others are alive and they're sharing stories of their loved ones.

Thanks for directing us to the post. Hoard to believe that sailing on the big ships can still be so dangerous. I hope the men escaped and are merely waiting for rescue.
I’ve read quite a few things about this and had the ship not lost power, it may have survived the storm. Ships get into storms and sudden squalls all the time. When I was stationed in Mayport it was standard ops for us to put to sea if a hurricane was forecast for the area. If you lose power while caught in the storm——————not good. Can’t really think of any good time in 50’ seas.
Females too and they drown just the same. The captain thought he could muscle the ship through the hurricane but then the engines failed and the ship was broad-sided by huge waves.
True there was a woman on board and as per the old “superstition” the ship apparently sank. Once again I hope they can be rescued.
May all 33 souls - not just the Americans - rest in peace.
More than one woman. I believe there were 3 or 4. I’m just pointing out that they drown just the same.
