Shooter used handgun in Oregon slayings

Oregon's top federal prosecutor says the shooter used a handgun when he opened fire on classmates at an Oregon college, killing nine and injuring nine others.

Interim U.S. Attorney Billy Williams said Friday Christopher Harper-Mercer stashed a rifle in another room and did not fire it. He says it's impossible to know what the shooter had planned for the rifle.

Williams says all the information investigators have uncovered so far suggests the gunman acted alone.

ATF Special Agent in Charge Celinez Nunez said earlier Friday that investigators recovered six weapons at Umpqua (UHMP'-kwah) Community College in Roseburg and seven others at the gunman's apartment.

The LEO’s in Oregon need to get their act together. Not releasing the killers name and photo is dangerous stuff. Some day there will be a cell of jihadists and citizens have a need and right to know who is going on a killing spree so they can be prepared and give info to authorities.

Autumn Vicari told NBC News her 19-year-old brother J.J. was in a classroom when Harper-Mercer opened fire but managed to escape. He saw the gunman ask victims if they were Christian and if they responded ‘yes’, he shot them in the head. If they said ‘other’ or refused to answer he shot them in the body.

It's amazing how much the media got wrong in the early hours of this story:

1. They claimed the shooter was 28, or 20 (he was 26).

2. They claimed the shooter was from the Mid-West, recently passed through Seattle, and headed south to Oregon for unknown reasons. He was apparently born in England, grew up in California, and lived in Oregon in a small town near Roseburg.)

3. They claimed he had no known connection to the college. (He was a student there.)

And today, CNN claimed he was a "conservative Republican."
