I think the only way to stop this is to simply not shop on those days; when I see a big store revert to closing, I assume that they paid a bunch of workers to stand around doing nothing.

The county next door to me here in NJ still has Blue Laws; the retailers are closed on Sundays, and probably holidays as well.

As part of the general “shittification” of our standard of living, not only are so many of the available jobs low-paying, but they are no longer 9-5 40 hours per week jobs; they are retail McJobs in which unfortunately many of those people are forced to work on holidays and such.

I remember when most places were closed every Sunday.”

I grew up in Kansas City. There were only two restaurants open on Sunday, both of them cafeterias, and they were only open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. We didn’t have “convenience stores” back then. The owner of our local Phillips 66 station went to our church. If you were in a real bind for gas, he would meet you at the station between 3 and 4 - not a minute earlier and not a minute later, but would give you a stern lecture about being better prepared in the future and would never do it twice in a row for the same person.

The horror.

Spending a day with one’s family giving thanks instead of pursuit of material possessions.

How does Staples, and Office Max/Depot stay competitive anyway? Most of what they sell is easily available at Walmart or Sam’s and Costco. Do you really need to spend $39.99 on an office wall clock?

That’s funny about the gas station. Bet no one ever got the lecture twice!! But nice of him to help in an emergency.

Times sure have changed— even some stores being open 24/7.

To be honest, let retailers do what they want. It’s their stores.

I work in transportation and work EVERY Thanksgiving and EVERY Christmas.

The day y’all quit traveling on holidays is the day I MIGHT reconsider my position.
