Facing a court-ordered deadline, the Obama administration is preparing to finalize stricter emissions limits on smog-forming pollution linked to asthma and respiratory illness.
The move fulfills a long-delayed campaign promise by President Barack Obama, but sets up a fresh confrontation with Republicans already angry about the administrations plans to curb carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants and to regulate small streams and wetlands.
Business groups panned the Environmental Protection Agencys proposed ozone rules as unnecessary when they were announced last fall, calling them the costliest regulation in history and warning they could jeopardize a resurgence in American manufacturing.
But EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy argues that public health benefits far outweigh the costs and says most of the U.S. can meet the tougher standards without doing anything new.
The rules are causing a ruckus on Capitol Hill even before the final plan is announced. The EPA is expected to act by Thursday to set a new ozone limit of 70 parts per billion or less in the atmosphere, down from the existing standard of 75.

I’m from North Dakota. We don’t have a smog problem. We had a smoke problem from wildfires in mismanaged forests to the west of our State, but that, too passed. Maybe the Government should get rid of the policy idiots that had us smoked out for better than 6 weeks this past summer and the EPA, too. We don’t need any more moving target regulations.
I do not smoke, but the worst respiratory grief I have had, has been from such things as mold spores, not from smoke. I’d like to know when the EPA is going to ban mold in open grassy areas.
In its ongoing effort to destroy the US economy, the Obama administration is set to wipe out a few more businesses.
They won’t. They’ll ban plowing.
The quickest way to resolve the problem is to cut off their air supply thus eliminating their ability to spread their bloviating spew.
Those bastards would prefer to shut this nation down under false pretense by what ever they can find to do so
Achtung, achtung! When David Bowie released We Are Hungry Men back in 1967, I wonder if anyone figured how close it would come to describing what some want this present-day epoch to be, and how much of it has come to pass already.
These are your orders:
Anyone found guilty of consuming
more than their allotted amount of air
will be slaughtered and cremated!
Only one cubic foot of air is allowed . . .
ALL EPA rules in the last 10 years are useless and should be repealed.
Isn’t plowing passe? No till farming eliminated plowing I thought
“Theyll ban plowing.”
WINNER! Visible dust is now an enemy.
So there have been EPA rules that were actually of any use at any time?
Yes, some of the clear water and clean air rules from the late 70’s & early 80’s were actually helpful in cleaning up some real messes.
There are farmers here who have used it, but not only is the equipment hideously expensive, no-till farming can increase the mold in the soil. Tillage actually gets the dirt out in the sunlight.
Keep in mind most dust (at least inside dwellings) is composed of tiny crumbs of skin. Next, the EPA will conduct a study to see who sheds the most, and ban that color of skin (I’ll give you three guesses and the first two don’t count...)
Time for that “everything that Obama does” list again.
a) Weakens America/AmericansThere are NO counter examples.
b) Distances America's allies
c) Strengthens America's enemies
d) Attacks Christianity
e) Serves Islam
f) Harms Israel
Or some combination of the above.
