Volkswagen Chief Martin Winterkorn Resigns Amid Emissions Scandal

FRANKFURT — Martin Winterkorn resigned as chief executive of Volkswagen Wednesday, taking responsibility for an emissions cheating scandal that has gravely damaged the carmaker’s reputation and may spread to the German economy.

“As C.E.O. I accept responsibility for the irregularities that have been found in diesel engines,” Mr. Winterkorn, who had headed the company since 2007, said in a statement.

But he continued to insist he personally committed no misconduct. “I am not aware of any wrong doing on my part.”

SO the simple question is, WHO approved this... someone intentionally did this, and it wasn’t some little peon acting alone, this was clearly an orchestrated effort by multiple folks high up in the organization.

Anecdotal for sure, but it seems the VW has become a favorite of the liberal crowd. This is going to bite.

Gosh, what a scandal, disabling mechanisms that diminished performance and fuel economy when at speed when emissions are at their lowest, vs slow street speeds and stop and go traffic where it was fully enabled.

I bet all the VW owners can’t wait to have their cars broken to satisfy some government bureaucrat.

Lesson learned

VW had their chance.

This is what happens when you don’t pay off the right people in the Obama administration with the right amount of money.

AFAIK car emissions are still only regulated during the LA City Traffic driving cycle at low and “high” (Denver) altitudes. Not on the highway except for fuel economy on the highway cycle.

The real scandal is that the EPA forces automobile companies like Volkswagen to kill their vehicles’ performance and gas mileage with ridiculous emissions control features and also makes customers submit to the emissions tests.

That is essentially correct, but the government’s position is that VW was committing a crime each time the system switched off emissions systems at speed since it was ‘disabling installed emissions control systems.’

Of course, it was also enabling those installed emissions control systems when the car slowed down again.

I honestly think that VW made a huge mistake in not fighting this tooth and nail. It would have been far cheaper than rolling over and playing dead to US regulators who will have a field day making VW come up with an expansive recall scheme, punishing them for the original violation, punishing them again for driver’s not choosing to have their cars neutered, punishing them a third time for enabling these ‘scofflaws’ who choose not to have their cars damaged... It was a gift that regulators will enjoy for many many years to come.

Volkswagen was advertising and selling something, specifically "clean diesel," that they were not delivering. I believe that's called consumer fraud.

I talked to a friend this weekend who works for a company associated with VW. He claimed “they all do that” - meaning all the manufacturers have software tailored to emission testing which kicks in when the test is done. (Time will tell, no doubt.)

They comply with the letter of the law if not exactly the spirit of the law.

Which is how most any company (not just auto) out there has to operate these days, given the increasingly idiotic laws.
