Prior to Donald Trump’s rally Monday night in Dallas, Texas, Chris Matthews and the panelists on MSNBC’s Hardball mocked Republican women and voters from “southwestern Virginia” of Scots-Irish heritage who’ve “got an attitude” and previously supported Democrats like Jim Webb.
Exhibiting why Democrats have been disappearing from offices in areas along the Appalachians, Matthews wrote them off as white people “like Pat Buchanan” of “Scots-Irish down in southwestern Virginia...where they’re kind of – the people that went to the mountains when they immigrated to the United States, they went right to the rural areas and they've got an attitude.”

It’s perfectly allowed to be a bigot as long as you are a liberal and the disparaging remarks are made against members of a non-protected class.

Pat Buchanan is Scots-Irish? He’s a full-blooded Catholic of Irish descent. Just like that idiot Matthews.
It appears they are misusing the term Scots-Irish.
IIRC the Scots-Irish,are not Scots and not very much Irish.
Mostly outsiders moved in to do racial cleansing on the cheap.
If Matthews were to say ‘Scotsman’ or ‘Irishmen’, that may not be PC.
Both my mom and dad have that "Scots-Irish" streak - by way of SW Virginia, no less - in their paternal lines, and while it may have changed in strength and some details, it never went away.

He fumbled the Iraq question first, which was bad, but then he started apologizing, which was terminal. His apologetics may have earned him plenty of false smiles from the MSM pundit gang, but it ended his career with the voters. He should have taken a cue from his brother: “I will never apologize for America.” One of the first things you learn in the military: “If you’re wrong, then stay wrong.”
