Boehner and his allies prepare fall battle with conservative GOP critics
Watshington Post ^ | 09/16/15

House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) is bracing for what could be the toughest weeks of his speakership as several dozen conservatives in his party are threatening to topple him unless he is more ferocious with Democrats during the upcoming fiscal showdowns.

That internal Republican feud has increased the chances that Washington, for the second time in two years, could stumble into a shutdown of the federal government.

The speaker’s lieutenants are openly girding for battle with the small but influential bloc of anti-Boehner conservatives, who have signaled that if Boehner cuts any deal that they don’t like with Hill Democrats and President Obama, they could seek to remove him from the speaker’s post. It is a threat that Boehner and his allies are taking seriously.

“The people considering this are being totally irresponsible, but Boehner’s guys, we’re getting ready for whatever may come — not out of fear, but with exasperation about what some Republicans are willing to do to their own party,” said Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.), who is part of the speaker’s circle of unofficial advisers.

Talk of unseating Boehner is not new, but this latest uprising is getting a jolt from the Republican presidential campaign, in which anti-establishment sentiment has driven two nonpoliticians, Donald Trump and Ben Carson, to the front of the pack.

Last week, Trump led a rally outside the Capitol opposing the Iran deal — enthusiastically attended by a half-dozen House Republicans who are Boehner critics — during which he made a blunt declaration about the party’s elder statesmen in Congress: “We are led by very, very stupid people.”

“We are led by very, very stupid people.”

Trump was being nice. That was the understatement of the year.

Boner just thinks this if just another skirmish in his long battle to silence conservatives against his featherbedded appeasement to Liberals, solely so that he can remain in power in his cloistered, pampered DC elitist Disneyland.

His sorely mistaken. This isn’t ‘just another skirmish’; it is the final battle. He and the rest of the establishment GOP politicians were given a chance at redemption in November 2014 and they pissed it away like the arrogant fools they are. His world is about to come to an end.

...conservatives in his party are threatening to topple him unless he is more ferocious with Democrats during the upcoming fiscal showdowns.

I don't get it. Why do we even have to attempt to threaten him if he truly is supposed to represent the GOP. I know he's a crybaby, but...come on...grow a pair and use the power you have to get the GOP moving again. You've had real power for months and what have you done with it. Zilch! And you wonder why people rally around Trump. It's because, with him, at least there's some hope that he'll punch a few libs in the snout given the chance. Instead, what we see is a pantywaist asking the opposition to tea. Does anyone have a spare spine we can send to DC?

That too is undoubtably true. To put it in other terms, they are corrupt and compromised.

When will this wimp get the message that want him and others like him to get the hell out of the way so we can at least try to turn this country around. To undo Obama's "fundamental transformation".

Rush had it right on his show that the Republicans in DC don’t care diddly squat what we want because it’s all about making the big money donors happy.

I know people who have worked inside the GOP. Rush is absolutely right; they don’t care diddly squat about us. But I guess that’s obvious to all by now.

If you battled Obama as hard as you battle conservatives, you wouldn't have this problem.

Many people here may be too young to remember Gingrich’s leadership in 1994.

He mounted attack after attack on Bill Clinton and forced Clinton to sign one bill after another or face political s**tstorms.

That was when the Libs started making excuses for Clinton and saying the Presidency was a “weak” office, he was doing what he could against the Evil Republicans.

So many here don’t like Gingrich because of his erratic behavior but he’s an example of what a Speaker could be doing with a majority: going after the obstacle in the White Hut. Regardless of what his ultimate policies were, he was leading.

Boner is the opposite of that.

Just wow!

“This is a continuation of the strange virus that’s running through the Republican Party, which I define as a weird form of right-wing Marxism where people are using Saul Alinsky-type tactics,” said Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), a Boehner confidant, likening the conservatives to the late radical activist from the 1960s.

"Posterity! you will never know how much it cost the present generation to preserve your freedom! I hope you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in Heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it." - John Adams, Letter to Abigail Adams, 1777

What an awesome responsibility those who call themselves "conservatives" have to Adams and the other Framers of America's Constitution "make good use" of the opportunity they have now to hold fast to ideas which, if followed, can "preserve" freedom for future generations!

If they "do not," then history will record their actions as a betrayal of the trust of all the brave men and women who have been willing to sacrifice everything for freedom's cause--from 1776 to now.

May all such elected officials feel the heavy cloak of responsibility they bear for the freedom of those future generations, and may their opinions recall those ideas of individual liberty so beautifully articulated by the Framers of the Constitution they are sworn to uphold.

"On every question of construction, let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, conform to the probable one in which it was passed." - Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, June 12, 1823, The Complete Jefferson, p. 322.
