Iran nuclear deal survives: Democrats block disapproval vote

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats voted to uphold the hard-fought nuclear accord with Iran on Thursday, overcoming ferocious GOP opposition and delivering President Barack Obama a legacy-making victory on his top foreign policy priority.

A disapproval resolution for the agreement fell two votes short of the 60 needed to move forward as most Democratic and independent senators banded together against it. Although House Republicans continued to pursue eleventh-hour strategies to derail the international accord and Senate Republicans promised a re-vote, Thursday's outcome all but guaranteed that the disapproval legislation would not reach Obama's desk.

As a result the nuclear deal will move forward unchecked by Congress, an improbable win by Obama in the face of unanimous opposition from Republicans who control Capitol Hill, GOP candidates seeking to replace him in the Oval Office and the state of Israel and its allied lobbyists in the U.S.

Let's take a minute to thank every Republican member of the US Senate, less Tom Cotton, for enabling this with the Corker Bill.

Let me get this straight:

1. A treaty entails a majority of the Senate to approve. Since there has not been revealed yet the full verbiage, this treaty is not a treaty.

2. The Dems under Reid threw the filibuster under the bus so they could get their way. As soon as the GOP came to power, it gave the filibuster back so the Dems could block oh so many things.

Why is this so difficult for the GOP powers to comprehend?

This 'deal' is the biggest SHAM ever perpetrated on the United States by the Muslims in the White House pretending to be Americans.

This is a deal for IRAN, not the U.S. It's time everyone WAKE UP and realize Iranian-born Jarrett started these negotiations IN SECRET to protect Iran from Israel and GIVE IRAN COVER TO BUILD NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

The enemies in the White House should be arrested and tried for treason. SOME of us Americans KNOW whose side they're on, AND IT'S NOT OUR SIDE.

Is there any reason that any Senator could not submit the Iran deal as a treaty for an up or down 2/3 vote?

Lets take another that voted with depraved indifference to elect them.

No matter what. Lesser evil.

This is ‘what’.

Can the GOP (real conservatives) still block the actual funds released of lifting the sanctions?

If McConnell chose he could have used the nuclear option and made it a simple majority to close debate. Or the could have let the dems filibuster until they ran out of gas.

This bill has the approval of the GOP leadership. McConnell and his allies are in the tank for Obama. His playing the long suffering victim of the administration is theater for the media to feed to the peasants.

Time for the “nuclear option”.

Seems like it was designed just for this.

"This 'deal' is the biggest SHAM ever perpetrated on the United States by the Muslims in the White House pretending to be Americans"

The very same statement can be made about every Republican Senator except Tome Cotton.

Every one of them.

They are co-conspirators pretending to be representative of us by stirring emotion when the deal was fait acompli months ago.

Incorrect. It is the complicit party.

Part of its complicity is due to stupidity. But your point is well taken.
