The number of beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known as food stamps, has exceeded 45 million for 50 straight months, according to data released by the Department of Agriculture (USDA).

In June 2015, the latest month for which data is available, there were 45,510,153 beneficiaries of the food stamp program, an increase of 14,869 between May and June.

Beneficiaries of this program now exceed the population of Canada, which totals 34,834,841, according to a widely used source for such figures.

The number of food stamp recipients first exceeded 45 million in May 2011. Since then, the number has consistently exceeded 45 million, hitting a record high of about 47,790,000 in December 2012.

In June 2015, households on food stamps received an average benefit of $256.05, and total benefits for the month cost taxpayers $5.7 billion.

The statistics from the Labor Bureau that I tried posting showing unemployment over the past years using the urls provided didn't show up.

Surprising, with the economy going so well, unemployment practically not heard from. Here's another statistic for you. When SS began there were 144 workers for every recipient. Today you're go one and half workers covering that single recipient.

Today you’re go one and half workers covering that single recipient. ...

that’s devastating.

you should see how food stamps are abused.

lost count of the number of drug addicts in my cab a few years ago who used it in very ingenious ways to get money.

Another political time bomb arranged by Obama.

Imagine the outcry if this is reduced back to pre 2008 figures of 15 million?

I am embarrassed to be an American, and watch all these freeloading sons of bitches get free stuff at every turn.

The good news is that there were 50 straight months.

I kinda thought that last few months were rather quite gay.

It’s un-American to even have a program like this IMO.

The whole concept of “safety nets” is ridiculous considering most of these freeloading SOB’s spend their entire lives on the net, never getting up.

What a slothy, lazy, and worthless society we’ve become.

A woman selling pies only at a local farmer’s market turned down EBT cards.

She stood on principle and told the carrier of the card that they should be using it for healthy food, not pies. She was actually turning down business.

Some of the freeloaders complained.

The organizers of the farmer’s market kicked out the pie lady for not accepting the cards.

Starting point - there are 320 million US residents.
73 million under 18 (students, kids)
48 million retirees
20 million Govt. employees (Fed, State & local)
1.5 million military
93 million unemployed.

My math may be screwed - but it seems there are only 54 million adults working for private companies (or self employed).

Don’t know if illegal immigrants count in these figures I found under census info.

Here they don’t have to use their EBT cards at the farmers markets. They receive vouchers, on top of the food stamps, to buy fresh fruit and veggies with. All the farmers markets accepts them. I stopped going to farmers markets after one of the vendors told me that after I asked what ‘that’ was. I asked because when I got there the only thing left was crap. All the welfare clients had already stripped all the good stuff with their vouchers.

Astonishing.

Sometimes I wonder why I bothered working for all of those years.

More than likely there is overlap, as there are employed who also get paid these benefits. In some cases, a recipient could be in more than one group (thinking military family on bennies, on two different lists, but only one person paid), etc... If there truly were only 54 million paying into the system, it'd have broken a long time ago.

Add in 32 million kiddies on the Fed school breakfast and lunch programs, and that’s a lot of free grub.

You can see why their are a lot of chubby and even obese “poor” people.

According to your numbers, only 26.4% have private sector jobs and are working.
