Dick Cheney on Iran deal: 'It is madness' ("fiery speech" to air live on C-SPAN2 at 9am)

Washington - Former Vice President Dick Cheney will say Tuesday that President Barack Obama is responsible for directly equipping Iran with the capability to destroy the United States, calling the negotiated nuclear deal "madness."

In a fiery speech to be delivered Tuesday at the American Enterprise Institute, the Republican security hawk will unleash an aggressive attack against the Iran deal, which Congress will begin debating this week.

"This agreement will give Iran the means to launch a nuclear attack on the U.S. homeland," Cheney will say, according to excerpts provided to CNN. "I know of no nation in history that has agreed to guarantee that the means of its own destruction will be in the hands of another nation, particularly one that is hostile."

But his speech is also timed to offer what aims to be a full-spectrum criticism of the deal.

Cheney is unconvinced, planning to say that the deal will speed other nations' desire for nuclear arsenals, embolden Iranian forces set on "regional domination" and allow Iranians to cheat on inspections as they have in the past.

"If you're looking for a quick summary of Secretary Kerry's position on the need for Iran to completely disclose all its past nuclear activity, let's just say he was for it before he was against it," Cheney will say, recalling Kerry's tortured explanation of his position on the most recent Iraq War.

Cheney is holding out hope for "a better deal."

"Arming and funding Iran while simultaneously providing them a pathway to a nuclear arsenal is not an act of peace," he will say. "It's not, as President Obama claims, the only alternative to war. It is madness."

Cheney was the best in Bush’s circle. Bush should have listened to him more instead of the others. He is a Great American.

Cheney was a disaster by any objective measure. He’s the personification of an establishment RINO, and he doesn’t do the Republicans any favors when he runs around making speeches reminding people why they had gotten sick and tired of the GOP by the time 2006 rolled around.

"If you're looking for a quick summary of Secretary Kerry's position on the need for Iran to completely disclose all its past nuclear activity, let's just say he was for it before he was against it," Cheney will say, recalling Kerry's tortured explanation of his position on the most recent Iraq War.

In this context, let's examine Dick Cheney's position on the invasion of Iraq. Apparently he was against it before he was for it:

"Once you got to Iraq and took it over and took down Saddam Hussein's government, then what are you going to put in its place? That's a very volatile part of the world. And if you take down the central government in Iraq, you could easily end up seeing pieces of Iraq fly off. Part of it the Syrians would like to have, the west. Part of eastern Iraq the Iranians would like to claim. Fought over for eight years. In the north, you've got the Kurds. And if the Kurds spin loose and join with Kurds in Turkey, then you threaten the territorial integrity of Turkey. It's a quagmire if you go that far and try to take over Iraq." -- Dick Cheney (April 15, 1994)

What’s the point of friendly fire here?

When was the last time the left went after their own like this?

I’m sorry but we’re well past the point where average Americans are blaming Bush / Cheney / Rumsfeld for their current problems. They’ve risen in the polls as people see how miserable their successors have been.

I still vividly remember Cheney's speech to the 2000 GOP convention, with the "Help is on the way.." refrain..

Speeches can be fiery and certainly one on Iran should be, but when will someone take action.

Republicans in Congress authorized the negotiations with Iran to begin with. Did they expect a good result?

All a fiery speech does is to create an emotional issue for the next election.

Its in Israel’s interest to act in this matter and I hope there is some action from them down the road.

Deal or no deal, Iran is not going to stop their efforts to build a nuclear weapon unless their facilities are destroyed, their scientists killed or the operation is otherwise sabotaged. The only thing this deal does is get Iran more money to build a nuclear weapon more quickly and to fund more terrorism.

In short, it moves the day of reckoning much closer.

To any patriotic, God-fearing, person who loves the United States, her way of life, and her constitution...it is madness.

But to a traitorous quisling it makes perfect since.
