The Donald and the Demagogues (Wall Street Journal)
Wall Street Journal ^ | Aug. 31, 2015 | By Bret Stephens

Posted on 09/02/2015 6:09:09 AM PDT by dennisw

Trump is America’s answer to Hugo Chávez.

If by now you don’t find Donald Trump appalling, you’re appalling.

If you have reached physical maturity and still chuckle at Mr. Trump’s pubescent jokes about Rosie O’Donnell or Heidi Klum, you will never reach mental maturity. If you watched Mr. Trump mock fellow candidate Lindsey Graham’s low poll numbers and didn’t cringe at the lack of class, you are incapable of class. If you think we need to build new airports in Queens the way they build them in Qatar, you should be sent to join the millions of forced laborers who do construction in the Persian Gulf. It would serve you right.

Since Mr. Trump joined the GOP presidential field and leaped to the top of the polls, several views have been offered to explain his popularity. He conveys a can-do image. He is the bluntest of the candidates in addressing public fears of cultural and economic dislocation. He toes no line, serves no PAC, abides no ideology, is beholden to no man. He addresses the broad disgust of everyday Americans with their failed political establishment.

And so forth and so on—a parade of semi-sophisticated theories that act as bathroom deodorizer to mask the stench of this candidacy. Mr. Trump is a loudmouth vulgarian appealing to quieter vulgarians. These vulgarians comprise a significant percentage of the GOP base. The leader isn’t the problem. The people are. It takes the demos to make the demagogue.

It says that we may soon have a conservative movement in which the American creed of “give us your tired, your poor” could yield to the Trumpian creed that America must not become a “dumping ground” to poor immigrants from Latin America, as if these millions of hardworking and God-fearing people are a specimen of garbage.

This guy must be the Charles Krauthammer of the Wall Street Journal. He will be the toast of the elite-liberal cocktail parties he frequents in DC and New York.

Posted for your delectation! :)

Wow even the idea of building better airports is being attacked as frightening / impossible. Plus the voters are being told they have no class.

So you think, Bret, that it is classy to hurl these childish insults at Mr. Trump and many of your readers who may support him? Is this what passes for political analysis at the WSJ? Sad.

"If by now you don’t find Donald Trump appalling, you’re appalling."

I have some words for Mr. Bret Stephens, too, but I won't type them because I don't want to be banned for life here. (The words are much stronger than "appalling".)

These leftist elitist bastards are now in full retard/panic mode! Here is but ONE of the reasons...
DONALD TRUMP IS RIGHT!!!
PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH YOUR LISTS!!
A VERY IMPORTANT piece if you want to fully understand the 14th Amendment argument! Folks, some really cunning and not so stupid people are on the verge of STEALING YOUR BIRTHRIGHT AND THAT OF YOUR CHILDREN AND GRAND CHILDREN!
If you don’t have time to read the entire thing, PLEASE at least read the paragraphs I’ve extracted below. If you’re STILL unclear why those on the left are slinging all this mud on Trump over this one, understand that a large percentage of those who come here ILLEGALLY are initially unable to fully support themselves until they plug into the underground/paid under the table economy and, because the left has created a welfare hammock for them, avail themselves of those programs (at which time many do both). Those programs create a “warm and fuzzy feeling” toward these leftists Democrats, almost guaranteeing they will become DEMOCRAT VOTERS once the left has succeeded in doing away with proof of citizenship in order to vote. (Not to belabor the point, but ask yourself WHY, during his recent trip to Kenya, obozo pledged over 50 million bucks to that corrupt government for A VOTER ID PROGRAM as his Just Us department has blown well over that amount trying to PREVENT STATES FROM REQUIRING PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP HERE??)
Sorry for the rant. Here are those paragraphs that condense much of the legal info in this piece: (See the link below for the entire piece.)

P. A. Madison, a modern day master of constitutional analysis, points out that “since illegal aliens are unlawfully in the US, their native country has a proper and primary claim of allegiance on the child. Thus, the completeness of their allegiance to the US is impaired, which therefore precludes automatic citizenship.” Slam dunk obvious, I’d say.
Also, Rep. Aaron Sargent, a representative from California during the Naturalization Act of 1870 debates, said the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause was not a de-facto right for aliens to obtain citizenship. Significantly, none of his contemporaries disputed that assertion.
Adding to this mix, here is a little case law since the 14th’s ratification.
In the Slaughterhouse Cases(1873), the Supreme Court observed that the 14th Amendment overturned the Dred Scott decision by making all persons born within the United States and subject to its jurisdiction, citizens of the US; the ruling went on to point out “that [the 14th Amendment’s] main purpose was to establish the citizenship of the Negro” and that “the phrase ‘subject to its jurisdiction’ was intended to exclude from its operation children of ministers, consuls, AND citizens or subjects of foreign states born within the United States”, thus reinforcing Sen. Howard’s construction above. So, since they cannot be subject to US jurisdiction, children of citizens of foreign sovereignties and children of foreign ministers/consuls/ambassadors cannot be lawfully considered US Citizens. Makes perfect sense.

It says that a movement that is supposed to believe in economic freedom doesn’t believe in the essence of economic freedom: to wit, the free movement of goods, services, capital and labor.

A little diversion from the overall condescending theme of this article, but Stevens here plainly says what many so-called free traders and free marketers refuse to admit.

The free movement of labor is a part of the free market and free trade. Many believe that as indicated by their support of high immigration and lax if any enforcement of immigration law. But few will come right out and say they support the free movement of labor.

A free market and free trade on a global scale is suicide for the affluent, advanced nations. And those who do not support the free movement of labor need to stop pretending that they are free marketers and free traders and advocate more sensible trade policies.

If I am appalling to a guy like this, I must be doing something right.

All righty then. GOPe butt-boy Bret Stephens doesn’t like Trump, which is fine. But then he goes on to insult millions of Americans who DO like Trump.

Mr. Stephens let me make one thing clear to you and your fellow country clubbers: I’ll vote for Hillary Clinton before i’ll send the RNC one thin dime or cast my vote for ANY of the GOPe candidates for President.

I have re-registered as an Independent, I will no longer belong to a Republican Party led by the likes of McConnell, Boehner, Bush, Rove, and you. Political scum of the lowest order every one of you.

The GOP can just die for all I care. If nothing else, Donald Trump has exposed the GOP for the sleazy, weasel party that it is. I despise you and your miserable party more than I despise the Democrats. At least they are up-front about what they stand for.

We know what the GOP stands for: Self-Aggrandizing power and money. Go to hell, Bret Stephens.

Oh and one other thing. You are about to witness an all-out assault on Trump like you’ve never seen.

Batten down the hatches folks. The month of September is going to be very, very interesting.

“Trump is America’s answer to Hugo Chávez.”

If this was true, the left would LOVE Trump since they love tyrannical leftists like Chávez.

“These vulgarians comprise a significant percentage of the GOP base.”

First of all, conservatives are NOT the GOP base. Second, we will not be lectured on vulgarity by those who defend murdering babies to sell their body parts.

“It [being forced to do slave labor] would serve you right.”

No, it would serve YOU right as a promoter of socialism. But afterward you would need to be incarcerated and held until your body parts could be removed without anesthesia and sold to the highest bidder.

Liberal filth. Lying putrid meat puppet spawn of Satan. Before you lecture of “stench”, smell your own rotting corpse formed from leftist depravity. Its foul odor has reached to Heaven.

NOTE TO WSJ: Donnie handed Linda Grahamnesty’s butt to her in response to Linda’s bad-mouthing him. Every one of those incidents were provoked and invited.

If you want a punching bag POTUS who will never defend himself or rebut even the most scurrilous attacks, see if you can get GWB to run again. Oh no, that’s right, he can’t. Well, then go suck up to Jebbie.

No doubt true, but I bet we've already heard most of it since Trump's been a high profile public figure for a few decades. The first volleys from Jebbie were pretty weak and repetitive.

I’m not sure if Bret Stephens is liberal or GOPe (which is possibly worse). I don’t intend to give WSJ my email or become a subscriber to find out. A cursory glance at his article titles indicate no coverage of anything socially conservative. He may have had a few negative comments about the Clintons or Pelosi, but he seems to have saved his most scathing criticisms for social conservatives.
