States with tough gun laws have fewer shooting deaths: study

The harder states make it to get guns — like New York — the fewer people die because of them, a new analysis of firearm restrictions shows.

New York State, with its relatively strict laws — restrictions that are even tougher in the five boroughs — had 4.2 gun deaths per capita in 2013, the third-fewest number of gun-related deaths nationwide, according to the National Journal’s study released Monday.

It examined gun-related deaths of all types — from murders to suicides and accidental shootings — in the year 2013 and found “while it’s certainly true that a number of factors contribute to the high rates of gun violence in the U.S., a comparison of state laws versus rates of shooting deaths does show a correlation.”

Hawaii had the lowest number of gun-linked deaths — 2.5 per 100,000 people — in the country in 2013, said the National Journal, a public policy magazine and website.

The Aloha State also places serious restrictions on gun buyers and owners: Permits are required to purchase handguns, as are background checks and a 14-day waiting period. In Hawaii, it is also relatively difficult to get either a concealed- or open-carry permit, according to the study.

The reverse of all that is generally true of Alaska, which had the highest rate of gun deaths: 19.8 per 100,000 people in 2013. Alaska doesn’t require permits or background checks to buy or carry guns, and there is no waiting period to obtain a firearm.

That same year in Virginia, where gun laws are less restrictive — and where TV news reporter Alison Parker and videographer Adam Ward were gunned down while live on air by a deranged ex-colleague last week — there were 10.2 gun deaths per capita, making it the state with the 19th-fewest gun-related deaths

Show me the researchers and who paid for the study and I’ll give you reason to doubt their findings.

Well if the New York Daily News says so it must be right. I recommend to all the communists that actually pay to read this... ahem... periodical to shelter in place.

Yeah! “Shots fired” almost every night in Utica, NY... All those registered gun owners are having a field day down the with their assault rifles...What? no? unregistered handguns? That can't be, not in NY /sarc

“The harder states make it to get guns — like New York — the fewer people die because of them, a new analysis of firearm restrictions shows.”

False logic in the first sentence, ascribing the cause of the deaths to guns, when it is behaviours that cause the deaths.

If a state has no hospitals, no people in that state die of “hospital deaths”.

Most of the “gun deaths” the media touts are suicides, for which there are a multitude of substitution methods.

Japan has hardly any guns, and a much higher suicide rate than the U.S.

Everytown for Gun Safety is an American nonprofit organization which advocates for gun control.

Everytown was founded in 2014, combining Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

No bias there

Dunno where they came up with their data, but the doj.gov website says
(carefully couched in number crunching)
that states with the least blacks have the least shootings, murders, robberies, muggings, rapes, etc etc ad nauseum...

They are counting suicides in these calculations, which skews the results tremendously.

I see basically four states: New York, Virginia, Hawaii and Alaska whose results supports the thesis of the report’s essence. I see no mention of California, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland (Baltimore) nor any other big urban city other than NYC. One might think “cherry picking”.

To me a reputable report of the “report” would include a list of all the states and a large set of cities as well.

Since the vast majority of crime, even on a per capita basis, happens in large cities, and all cities are run by Rats as well as having large percentages of blacks, Hispanics, whites, other minorities packed in small spaces with no motivation to work, so they have infinite amounts of free time, combined with low IQ, and you have trouble.

It’s not the gun or gun laws. If people have to get up each day and hustle for a job to live, crime would plummet. Idle time, no motivation, youth is a recipe for disaster.

Alaska doesn’t require permits or background checks to buy

This is false, intentionally so, IMHO. Background checks are required in all 50 states to purchase a gun from a dealer.

So I guess North Korea would be a perfect place to live, as there are no guns at all in the hands of the populace.

We need to outlaw Barack Obama. Several studies have found that suicides have quadrupled since he became president and that suicides are at an all time high.

I don’t care what weapon was used. What is the rate of VIOLENT CRIME in these jurusdictions?

From Lion In Winter when Eleanor of Aquitane is lecturing Richard about the men he has killed violently and Richard pointed out her prolific use of poison, “I never heard a corpse ask how it got so cold.”

4.2 gun deaths PER CAPITA??? So that means that every person living in NY shot and killed 4.2 people?

“New York State, with its relatively strict laws — restrictions that are even tougher in the five boroughs — had 4.2 gun deaths per capita in 2013 ...”
