D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser stood before a crowd in a stuffy Southeast D.C. school gymnasium on Thursday to outline her plan to stem a rising number of homicides.
But it wasn’t the plan hoped for by some residents, who erupted in jeers when the mayor said she will put more police on city streets.
An increase in killings has pushed the total of homicides in the city to 103 so far this year — one shy of the year-end total of 104 homicides recorded last year. And the uptick in slayings this summer has led officials to try to develop a plan to tamp down the violence.
As part of her plan, Ms. Bowser said she will authorize overtime for 235 police officers to stay on the street for 12-hour shifts.
“I will offer more overtime funding to sustain that presence for as long as it takes,” Ms. Bowser said, greeted with a chorus of boos.
“More police is not the answer!” shouted protesters from the back of the crowd.

My impression of Mayor Muriel Bowser is that she is not a deep thinker, is way over her head in the job she holds, and has the IQ of dust. That said, this move is one that a sane person would make. On the other hand, if the citizens of that city want utter chaos, should she hand it over to them and get another Ferguson? When they yell they don’t want more police to address the problem, exactly what is their plan? Simply stated: They don’t have a clue. Evidently, blacks killing blacks is okay, it’s when white protect themselves from blacks that the soup hits the fan. Meanwhile, I sure would avoid that part of the country for a while.

I don't think she's stupid; she's a graduate of Elizabeth Seton High School.
OTOH, she seems to be a committed leftist, and black racist, and her ideology leaves her ill-prepared to deal effectively with DC's pathologically corrupt government and completely dysfunctional, welfare/government dependent black community.
"More police" is probably better than "do nothing", but it's completely inadequate. It's a Band-Aid on a sucking chest wound.

“More police” means nothing when said cops can’t do their jobs without risking their lives, freedom, pensions, etc.; when Newark NJ laid off over 160 cops during a record-setting homicide spree, it made no difference at all. If you saw the cops, you’d understand: bubble asses, fat guts, etc. on a bunch of affirmative action tokens. They were never going to engage any criminals, just cash their checks and grow...
Washington MPD aren’t a bunch of buffoons at the patrolman level. At the administrative level, MPD is as screwed up as the rest of DC. Not as bad as Baltimore, these days, but badly in need of a housecleaning. Neither Muriel Bower nor DC Police Chief Kathy Lanier would survive that housecleaning.

I didn’t know any cities still hired effective cops anymore; I thought they’d all gone the way of patronage-type jobs. In some cities they have special-forces type units (not SWAT - just the ones without fat asses and guts) that do the real work, and the rest just lounging around...
